  • An Individualized Integrative Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) major requires perseverance, initiative and thoughtfulness. It is an excellent alternative for those with an entrepreneurial mindset who enjoy setting high standards for themselves, want courses and other learning experiences to be personally meaningful, and really are ready to do the thinking and consultation needed to design their own degree.

  • Senior Project courses offer opportunities for internship, entrepreneurship, individualized projects, and digital portfolios.

Plan, coordinate, or edit content of material for publication. May review proposals and drafts for possible publication. Includes technical editors.

Plan or conduct art therapy sessions or programs to improve clients' physical, cognitive, or emotional well-being.

Address organizational sustainability issues, such as waste stream management, green building practices, and green procurement plans.

What are some courses offered in Individualized Integrative Studies at ODU?

IDS 368:
Internship in Interdisciplinary Studies

An opportunity to integrate service and applied learning experience with interdisciplinary perspectives. Prerequisite: junior standing and permission of individualized interdisciplinary studies program coordinator.

IDS 493:
IDS Electronic Portfolio Project

The preparation of an electronic portfolio integrating the student's academic study, work experiences, skill identification and work products. Alternative formats are used for varying uses of the portfolio. Prerequisites: IDS 300W or permission of the instructor and senior standing.

IDS 497:
IDS Individualized Senior Project

A total of 3 or 6 credits over one or two semesters. Prerequisites: IDS 300W, permission of the instructor and an approved IDS curriculum plan. This course is a vehicle for the execution of the senior project requirement of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. The project and number of credits will be negotiated between the student, the department, and the faculty sponsors.


What are the requirements to apply for Individualized Integrative Studies at ODU?

Students entering the BA,BS program in Individualized Integrative Studies should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)

To be accepted, the student must be in good academic standing (2.00 GPA) and must submit a proposal outlining an appropriate sequence of courses and other learning experiences. This course sequence cannot duplicate any other major and must include at least 30 hours of courses to be taken after the student is accepted by the Individualized Interdisciplinary Program. Acceptance decisions are made by the Coordinator of Interdisciplinary Studies, the IDS Advising Committee, and faculty sponsors.
