Dissolved organic matter cycling in marine sediments and its relationship to oceanic carbon and nitrogen cycling

In this talk I will discuss work we have carried examining dissolved organic matter (DOM) cycling in marine sediments, in part using the results from a reaction-transport model applied to depth profiles of DOC and DIC concentrations and isotopic signatures (d13C and ∆14C) from anoxic marine sediments.  I will also discuss recent 1H-NMR studies of whole pore water DOM samples. With these results I will examine the role benthic fluxes of DOM may play as a source of DOM to the oceans, particularly refractory DOM.  I will also discuss the impact these fluxes may have on the radiocarbon age of oceanic DOC.
