Philosophy (B.A.)
This program is designed to give students a solid grounding in the history of philosophy, and an ability to analyze arguments proposed in serious discussions of any subject. ODU offers three tracks: general, political and legal studies, and religious studies. The political and legal studies concentration is aimed at students interested in social and political philosophy, particularly those planning to attend law school. The religious studies concentration is designed for students looking to understand the role of religion in human culture and to expand their cultural competency. Students can also choose to minor in religious studies.

What is Philosophy at ODU like?

What are some courses offered in Philosophy at ODU?
PHIL 353:
Asian Religions
A study of religious and philosophical traditions of India, China and Japan. Primary emphasis will be given to Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Prerequisites: Junior standing and three semester hours in philosophy, or permission of the instructor.
PHIL 402:
Gender and Philosophy
A philosophical survey of approaches to understanding gender and gender differences. The course will also serve as an introduction to feminist philosophy, with a particular emphasis on feminist ethics. Prerequisites: Junior standing and three semester hours in philosophy, or permission of the instructor.
PHIL 531:
Nineteenth-Century Philosophy
A study of significant intellectual innovations and revolutions in nineteenth century European thought that helped shape the modern mind. Emphasis will be given to the writings of Kant, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Marx, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche.
Requirements
What are the requirements to apply for Philosophy at ODU?
Students entering the Bachelor of Arts program in Philosophy should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)
A student needs to have earned a grade of C or better in ENGL 110C or its equivalent and completed at least 26 credit hours
It is also recommended the student have completed PHIL 110P, PHIL 120P, PHIL 230E, or PHIL 250E, but it is not required
