The minor in public law is designed to support students who are interested in specializing in public law and strengthening their understanding of politics and government. The program might be particularly attractive to those interested in attending law school. Combined with politics and public policy, the public law minor is highly relevant and useful, and prepares students to engage the future as informed citizens and potentially as students of the law.

Introduces the student to the American legal system through an examination of its institutions, practitioners, and processes. A general survey of constitutional law, administrative law, civil and criminal law, and selected topics of substantive and procedural dimensions of the court system. This is a writing intensive course. Prerequisites: POLS 101S and a grade of C or better in ENGL 211C or ENGL 221C or ENGL 231C.
In-depth analysis of the American court system with an emphasis on the political behavior of the system's participants and the procedural dimensions of the court system. Prerequisites: POLS 101S.
An examination of the vexatious line between the rights of individuals and those of the state in the American democracy, focusing on such major issues as freedom of expression and worship; freedom of the press; separation of church and state; privacy; and racial and gender discrimination. Prerequisites: POLS 101S.
Students entering the Minor program in Public Law should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)
For completion of the public law minor, a student must have a minimum overall cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all courses required for the minor (exclusive of lower-level courses and prerequisite courses) and complete a minimum of six hours in upper-level courses in the minor requirement through courses offered by Old Dominion University. No more than a total of three credit hours will be counted toward the political science minor from POLS 367, POLS 368 and POLS 497.
