What makes Maritime History at ODU unique?

The Graduate Certificate in Maritime History offers candidates the unique opportunity to develop a thematic focus during their graduate education. Due to the inter-/transdisciplinary approach of maritime history as an academic discipline, the program will provide students with methods and tools beyond the standard tools of the historian that are usable not only in maritime history, but a wide range of other fields as well. In particular, the certificate offers further training to bridge the gap between the humanities and the natural sciences.

The program offers a unique opportunity for cooperation with international researchers during graduate education, including the International Maritime History Association (IMHA) and the multiple departments studying maritime affairs and oceanic sciences across ODU. The program also provides opportunities for internships with leading maritime museums around the globe.

Studies in Maritime History
The seminar explores recent maritime historiography and demonstrates how maritime history presents unique understandings of human history and also works within or redefines broader historical constructs. Students will analyze sources related to specific topics of maritime history.
Requirements
What are the requirements to apply for Maritime History at ODU?
Students entering the Certificate program in Maritime History should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Graduate Admission)
For current MA candidates, the certificate will be awarded at the time of graduation on certification of the completion of requirements by the graduate program director in accordance with the policies of the University Registrar. For those already holding the MA in History, who are completing the certificate beyond the degree, the certificate will be awarded on completion of the 12 hours of required coursework as certified by the graduate program director in accordance with the policies and procedures of the University Registrar.
Students pursuing the Graduate Certificate are subject to all GPA and other requirements and policies of the department, college and university applicable to students pursuing a degree in the MA in History program.
