This is a guide developed by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice to help students understand transfer credit. For any questions, contact the chief department advisor (CDA).
What you need to know depends on what are you interested in transferring in. Find below the section that applies to you.
The Admissions Office determines what transfers in. If your transcript has already been evaluated by Admissions, refer to the ODU transcript to see what was accepted.
Once Admissions has made its decisions, the Soc/CJ department can make decisions about transfer equivalency for our classes at the student's request. See the CDA for questions.
For questions about the acceptance of classes outside our dept, students must go to the appropriate department. The student may bring course descriptions and/or syllabi for specific courses to the Office of Admission for further evaluation if it is believed that elective credits match specific courses.
The Applied Associates does not fill general education requirements for the University. Courses are evaluated by the Admissions Transfer Office on a case-by-case basis. If your transcript has already been evaluated by Admissions, refer to the ODU transcript to see what transferred. Students who complete the core curriculum transfer package, under the recently approved agreement with the VCCS, will meet the lower-division general education requirements for the University. However, specific lower-division requirements must be met with a grade of C or better and are identified by the * on the curriculum sheet.
The department cannot accept any CRJS classes other than those that have already been transferred in by Admissions. If, however, students have an Applied Criminal Justice degree, we can waive CRJS 222 on a case-by-case basis. See the CDA if there is a question.

All University general education requirements are met. However, for the College/Department, students need:

This is evaluated by the Admissions Office. Admissions will decide whether the degree fulfills ODU's general education requirements. If it does not, Admissions will determine the transferability of each course. If your transcript has already been evaluated by Admissions, view the results on LEOONLINE.
Transfer For Current ODU Students Interested in Taking Classes Elsewhere:
Those individuals who are already taking classes at ODU may take classes elsewhere and receive transfer credit at ODU.
If you are thinking about taking a class elsewhere that you will want to transfer into ODU, there are two issues to keep in mind. The first is the limits on transfer credit. The second is how to find out what will transfer in as what. Both depend on what types of classes you want to transfer in.
There is no limit on the number of lower-level general education courses you can transfer to meet degree requirements. However, you must earn a grade of C or better to transfer and must have an official transcript sent to the ODU Office of Admission for evaluation before the course is counted towards graduation. Also, be aware that a class at another college or university having a similar name and/or number does not mean it will transfer to ODU. Transfer Equivalency Guide
Now follow instructions there to find the state and the school you are going to. You can then look up different classes and see which will transfer to ODU and as what.
The university requires students take at least 12 hours from their major at ODU. Because our classes are very specific, it is difficult to find equivalent courses for many of the courses at area colleges and universities. In addition, be aware that due to articulated guidelines, courses from a community college will never transfer in higher than a 200 level course. Consequently, courses from community colleges cannot be used to count for any of our 300/400 level credits.
To see what classes will transfer in you must check with the CDA. You should bring a course description and include a written statement indicating why a particular course at another university should be judged to be equivalent to a specific course in our major. Our Capstone Research Project must be taken at Old Dominion University. Also, internships and independent studies will not be approved as transferable from other colleges.

Because our classes are very specific, it is difficult to find equivalent courses for many of the courses at area colleges and universities.
