OES Fall Seminar - James Kinter, GMU

 - time/details may vary.
11/10/2022 3:00 PM EST - 4:00 PM EST
Oceanography & Physical Sciences Building - 200
James Kinter with George Mason University will speak. Please join us for a reception in OCNPA 404 after the seminar. Resolving the Earth System at Actionable Scale: Current Challenges and Prospects for the Future Earth system modeling at actionable scale will be discussed. In particular, the current state of the art and the future potential to run global models at ultra-high resolution - with grids that allow or resolve atmospheric convection, oceanic eddies, landscape scale variations in soil type and vegetation, and leads and polynyas in sea ice – will be described. Such models are needed to directly represent the phenomena that give rise to extreme events that stress infrastructure such as flash floods, riverine floods, and coastal erosion and incursion. Three projects conducted about a decade ago will be used to illustrate the promise and challenges.

The Ocean & Earth Sciences departmental seminar informs students, staff, faculty and the University community about recent issues. For more than 40 years, the series has fostered connection among current and future professionals. Seminars are held most Thursdays at 3 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters.
