Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health (BSEH)
Environmental and occupational health is the evaluation and management of factors that impact the environmental health of the community and the safety and health of people in the workplace.

The students will be indoctrinated into all of the various programs and topics that comprise industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and environmental health. Each program area provides course work in the regulations, work and community exposures, health hazards, and controls. Course materials cover all current general industry practices including measurement, evaluations, inspections, and how to determine risks and health impacts.
This program is taught by environmental health professionals and Certified Industrial Hygienists with extensive, practical field experience. Students are provided scenario-based exams and exercises to foster critical thinking and problem solving. The program also involves an internship to provide hands-on experience at health departments, industrial setting, shipyards, wastewater sites, and various other settings.
This program will prepare students for entry level position in environmental health, occupational safety and health, and industrial hygiene. Students leave ODU with practical knowledge from internships, and a basic educational backgrounds in all related topics. They are prepared to use their relevant coursework as a foundation to gain experience and competence in their new jobs. Those already in the field walk away with additional, current professional information to better prepare them for certification exams and job success.

Program Requirements
Students must complete the following courses prior to entering the Environmental Health Program: ENGL 110C, ENGL 231C, BIOL 121N/122N, BIOL 123N/124N, BIOL 103, BIOL 250 or 240, CHEM 121N/122N, CHEM 123N/124N, CHEM 211, CHEM 212, PHYS 111N, COMM 101R, MATH 162M and STAT 130M.
NOTE: Option D satisfies the Upper Division General Education requirement by completing six (6) credits at the 300-400 level outside of the college of your major. Foreign language may be satisfied with 3 years of 1 or 2 years of 2 languages in high school; graduation from HS prior to 12/31/85, or with AA or AS Degree from VCCS.
Graduation Requirements
Requirements for graduation include a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 overall and in the major, a minimum of 121 credit hours, which must include both a minimum of 30 credit hours overall and 12 credit hours in upper-level courses in the major program for Old Dominion University, completion of ENGL 110C and ENGL 211C, 221C or 231C, and the writing intensive (W) course in the major with a grade of C or better, and completion of Senior Assessment.
Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH)
Public health professionals "protect individuals, families and communities from serious health threats" and strive to improve society's quality of life.

Graduates of the Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences with a major in Public Health will possess knowledge and skills necessary to preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society.
The program also provides students with courses in basic research methods necessary for assessment, analysis, communication, research, problem solving and critical thinking abilities in the emerging emphasis on evidence-based health care and public health. Students will have the opportunity to gain practical public health exposure and mentoring in clinical, research, or community settings. The graduates of our program will be ready to serve as invaluable leaders in the health care services.

Must be completed with a C or better; C- is not acceptable. Application deadlines are February 15th, May 15th and October 15th. CHP 200, ENGL 110C, BIOL 121N/122N and 123N/124N, MATH 162M and STAT 130M must be completed with grade of C or better before submitting program application. Students must be admitted to the program before enrolling in any 300/400 level CHP major courses. Lower division general education requirements must be complete before enrolling in 300/400 level CHP major courses.

Mission: The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences is to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance the administration and delivery of health services. By providing our students excellent instruction and the opportunity for hands on experience, the program endeavors to create students that are assets to the field of healthcare. Our mission aligns with Old Dominion University's mission to serve students and enrich Virginia, the nation, and the world through the creation of a rigorous academic program, strategic partnerships, and active civic engagement.
Vision: The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences' major aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences that will enable them to function as entry level health service administrators, prepare for continuing graduate education, and enhance the abilities of students with existing professional health care experience. Our program will also promote diversity and embrace the military community.
Values: The graduates of our program will be ready to serve as competent leaders and members of the health care administration profession.
Health Administrators plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services. They might manage facilities, specific clinical areas and practices for groups of physicians. They facilitate direct changes that conform to changes in healthcare laws, regulations, and technology.

Internship Application
Undergraduate Minors
A minor in community health is available in the BSHS Health Services Administration program and requires a minimum of 12 semester hours of CHP courses.
The minor in community health is designed to prepare students in the ever-changing world of health care and health behavior as practitioners and offers courses such areas as nutrition, healthcare marketing and use of policy and health administration methods. The goal of the minor is to emphasize operations and public health preparedness and emphasize communication and critical thinking. It is possible to complement the minor with courses in environmental or occupation health.
It is especially attractive to students in other majors such as psychology, engineering, occupational and technical studies, and business who may reasonably anticipate public health and community health as core component of their duties. The minor prepares the students for experience in internship sites like the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, hospitals, nursing homes, fitness centers, work site health education programs, and substance abuse prevention centers to name a few.
This minor focuses on the study and management of natural and man-made factors that affect the environment and consequently, the health and well-being of the general population as well as special population groups.
This minor is perfect for students:
- Wishing to pursue or enhance their career as environmental health practitioners, industrial hygienists, or occupational safety specialists.
- Who desire to enter a career in federal, state and local government, the military, private businesses, and industry.
- In most degree programs who want more insight in environmental sciences.
Academic Catalog
Continuing environmental degradation is a worldwide problem threatening the quality of life and its viability. The problem can only be understood and addressed by drawing upon the resources of multidisciplinary approaches. The multidisciplinary perspective center of this minor focuses on the human dimensions of the human-environment equation and includes geographical and ecological approaches, scientific and technological methodologies, planning and public policy issues, and ethical, political, economic, and legal considerations. The interdisciplinary minor in environmental issues and management requires 12 credit hours of 300/400-level courses selected from at least two different disciplines with a maximum of six credits from any one discipline.

A minor in occupational safety is available in the environmental health program and requires a minimum of 12 semester hours of ENVH courses in safety. The minor in occupational safety is designed to prepare students to meet safety standards and guidelines in such areas as business, education and industry with the goal of managing operations to minimize financial losses resulting from accidents, health claims, legal actions and property damage. It is especially attractive to students in majors such as engineering, occupational and technical studies, and business who may reasonably anticipate assignment of safety as an additional duty.
