Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health (BSEH)

Environmental and occupational health is the evaluation and management of factors that impact the environmental health of the community and the safety and health of people in the workplace.

The students will be indoctrinated into all of the various programs and topics that comprise industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and environmental health. Each program area provides course work in the regulations, work and community exposures, health hazards, and controls. Course materials cover all current general industry practices including measurement, evaluations, inspections, and how to determine risks and health impacts.

This program is taught by environmental health professionals and Certified Industrial Hygienists with extensive, practical field experience. Students are provided scenario-based exams and exercises to foster critical thinking and problem solving. The program also involves an internship to provide hands-on experience at health departments, industrial setting, shipyards, wastewater sites, and various other settings.

This program will prepare students for entry level position in environmental health, occupational safety and health, and industrial hygiene. Students leave ODU with practical knowledge from internships, and a basic educational backgrounds in all related topics. They are prepared to use their relevant coursework as a foundation to gain experience and competence in their new jobs. Those already in the field walk away with additional, current professional information to better prepare them for certification exams and job success.

Program Requirements

Students must complete the following courses prior to entering the Environmental Health Program: ENGL 110C, ENGL 231C, BIOL 121N/122N, BIOL 123N/124N, BIOL 103, BIOL 250 or 240, CHEM 121N/122N, CHEM 123N/124N, CHEM 211, CHEM 212, PHYS 111N, COMM 101R, MATH 162M and STAT 130M.

NOTE: Option D satisfies the Upper Division General Education requirement by completing six (6) credits at the 300-400 level outside of the college of your major. Foreign language may be satisfied with 3 years of 1 or 2 years of 2 languages in high school; graduation from HS prior to 12/31/85, or with AA or AS Degree from VCCS.

Graduation Requirements

Requirements for graduation include a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 overall and in the major, a minimum of 121 credit hours, which must include both a minimum of 30 credit hours overall and 12 credit hours in upper-level courses in the major program for Old Dominion University, completion of ENGL 110C and ENGL 211C, 221C or 231C, and the writing intensive (W) course in the major with a grade of C or better, and completion of Senior Assessment.

Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH)

Public health professionals "protect individuals, families and communities from serious health threats" and strive to improve society's quality of life.

Graduates of the Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences with a major in Public Health will possess knowledge and skills necessary to preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society.

The program also provides students with courses in basic research methods necessary for assessment, analysis, communication, research, problem solving and critical thinking abilities in the emerging emphasis on evidence-based health care and public health. Students will have the opportunity to gain practical public health exposure and mentoring in clinical, research, or community settings. The graduates of our program will be ready to serve as invaluable leaders in the health care services.

Graduates of the Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences with a major in Public Health will possess knowledge and skills necessary to preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society.

Program Requirements

ODU students who have completed all prerequisite courses with a C or better and meet the minimum cumulative GPA (2.00) requirement are admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Public Health program. Transfer students may complete the prerequisite courses at another college or university but are responsible for having a transfer credit evaluation completed by the transfer evaluation unit in the Office of Admissions to determine that transfer courses are equivalent and acceptable to Old Dominion University requirements. 

Admission is conducted on a rolling basis. Students must be accepted to the program before enrolling in any 400-level required course. For non-native English speakers, a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 on the paper-based test (or 79-80 on the iBT) is required.

Bachelor of Science in Health Science (BSHS)

BSHS Health Services Administration Program

Mission: The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences is to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance the administration and delivery of health services. By providing our students excellent instruction and the opportunity for hands on experience, the program endeavors to create students that are assets to the field of healthcare. Our mission aligns with Old Dominion University's mission to serve students and enrich Virginia, the nation, and the world through the creation of a rigorous academic program, strategic partnerships, and active civic engagement.

Vision: The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences' major aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences that will enable them to function as entry level health service administrators, prepare for continuing graduate education, and enhance the abilities of students with existing professional health care experience. Our program will also promote diversity and embrace the military community.

Values: The graduates of our program will be ready to serve as competent leaders and members of the health care administration profession.

Health Administrators plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services. They might manage facilities, specific clinical areas and practices for groups of physicians. They facilitate direct changes that conform to changes in healthcare laws, regulations, and technology.

There are 2 pathways in the Health Services Administration program

  • Health Services Administration - You have little or no professional experience in a health-related field and are looking to start a new career
  • Health Services Administration-Professional - You have a certification or licensure stemming from education and experience in a specific health-related field such as nursing, radiation technology etc.

Graduates of the Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences with a major in Health Services Administration will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance the administration and the delivery of health services through healthcare management and policy education

Graduates of the Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences with a major in Health Services Administration will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance the administration and the delivery of health services through healthcare management and policy education.

These graduates will serve as leaders for health care organizations in the public, private, and military organizations. Students will have the opportunity to gain practical healthcare management experience and drive the innovation in healthcare policy.

Accreditation: This concentration is accredited by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).

Must be completed with a C or better; C- is not acceptable. Application deadlines are February 15th, May 15th and October 15th. CHP 200 and STAT 130M must be completed with grade of C or better before submitting program application. Students must be admitted to the program before enrolling in any 300/400 level CHP major courses. Lower division general education requirements must be complete before enrolling in 300/400 level CHP major courses.

NOTE: Elective credits may be needed to achieve 120 credit hours required for the degree. Suggested minors/certificates: Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Environmental Issues and Management, Health and Wellness, Diversity Certificate, Entrepreneurial Certificate. Suggested electives: ENVH 401, ENVH 420, HLSC 405. Oral Communication, Philosophy and Impact of Technology requirements are met in the major. Upper Division General Education is met by Management Minor.
