K9 Unit Joins the ODU Police Department

Meet K9 Chase and K9 Buddy!

ODUPD is proud to announce to the Monarch Nation that we have a New K9 Unit. ODUPD has been working on developing this a K9 Unit since 2019. Currently ODUPD has two fully trained and equipped K9 Teams. The ODUPD K9 Unit participates in regional trainings and respond to calls for assistance with our Regional patterners in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Virginia State Police and the FBI in the Region."

Sgt Kane is the Supervisor of the K9 Unit. Sgt. Kane joined ODUPD in 2020 to assist in the creation of and to supervisor the ODUPD K9 Unit after retiring from Norfolk PD with 24 years of service. Sgt. Kane was a member of Norfolk Police Department K9 Corp for 16 of those years. Sgt. Kane's last 6 years with Norfolk PD, he served as the supervisor of the Norfolk K9 Corp Explosive Detection Teams as well as the Regional Explosive Detection K9 Coordinator. Sgt. Kane's partner is K9 Chase, K9 Chase is a 3 year old German Shepard certified in Explosive Detection.

K9 Officer Wimbrough was selected to be ODUPD's for K9 Officer. K9 Officer Wimbrough is a 5 year veteran of the ODUPD serving in Patrol Operations and the Accreditation Unit before transferring to the K9 Unit. K9 Officer Wimbrough was trained and certified as an Explosive K9 Handler through Norfolk Police Department in 2020. K9 Officer Wimbrough's partner is K9 Buddy. K9 Buddy is a 1 year old Labrador Retriever. K9 Officer Wimbrough and K9 Buddy are certified in Explosive Detection.
