Scientific discovery, integration, application and teaching in Chesapeake, Australia and beyond
presented by William C. Dennison
With a career spanning several decades based in the Chesapeake region and Australia, stories about scientific discovery, integration, application and teaching will be shared with the audience. These stories include Chesapeake submerged aquatic vegetation, socio-environmental report cards, community and stakeholder engagement, science communication, the Healthy Waterways journey and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, comparing Chesapeake to Manila and Tokyo Bays and transforming environmental education. But to give each story full justice, the audience will be presented with a short synopsis of each story and then will vote on which of these stories will be fully articulated. The overall theme will be how to combine the four elements of scholarship (discovery, integration, application, and teaching) into a career trajectory, and the lessons from each of these stories for early career scientists. This novel seminar style will be the first time this approach has been taken, so the audience will either be tested for their patience or rewarded with a seminar that leads to stimulating conversation.
