Dr. Lynn Wiles, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing was recently selected as a University Professor. The designation of University Professor recognizes faculty members at the University who are outstanding teachers at the undergraduate level. Only tenured faculty members are considered for this honor.

Dr. Wiles has been teaching in the undergraduate nursing program for 24 years and, is recognized as the faculty expert in critical care nursing. Her initial appointment was at the rank of Lecturer in 1996, but over the years she earned a PhD, converted to a tenure track position in 2011 and, was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure effective December 25, 2017.

Since joining the faculty in the School of Nursing, Dr. Wiles has taught a variety of courses in both the pre-licensure and post-licensure BSN curriculums. However, her expertise and impact is most associated with a required course in the senior year of the pre-licensure BSN curriculum for which she has been the primary professor throughout her employment at ODU. This course focuses on concepts and information associated with advanced adult health nursing.

Dr. Wiles is an effective instructor who sets the bar high for her students. She utilizes a variety of teaching methods that are well-received by students; her teaching effectiveness is consistently rated high. She encourages students to explore issues in depth, as well as challenge their understanding of physiologic concepts and clinical issues in relation to professional nursing practice. Her active, current practice as an emergency room nurse provides relevance to course content; her clinical stories illustrate the application of knowledge that students highly value.

Dr. Wiles' positive influence on students while they are enrolled in the undergraduate nursing program has had a profound impact on the large number of ODU graduates who have since gone on to work as nurses in emergency and critical care settings. As one program alumnus stated, "If you were to mention Dr. Lynn Wiles in our local nursing community, especially the critical care nursing community, there is probably very few that have not been taught or mentored by her."

Dr. Lynn Wiles will hold the title of University Professor permanently, be so identified in University publications, and will receive an annual monetary award of discretionary funds to support her professional development for the four years following her appointment. Her name will be added to a plaque containing the names of all University Professors that is prominently displayed at the University.

Congratulations, Lynn!!
