Nursing Students Touch Lives in Guatemala

Last spring break, health science students spent eight memorable days in Antigua, Guatemala. Partnered with Corazon de los Niños (Heart of the Children), an organization that serves 22 barrios (neighborhoods) in the Sacatepéquez state of Guatemala, students participated in service learning projects that impact global health. They had the opportunity to learn about the social, economic, and health issues that arise in Guatemala and the mission of our partner organization in providing health and social services to address these issues. The program included presentations by local health care providers and a tour of a local, nonprofit hospital to observe Guatemala's health care system in practice. The first service project was at the primary school and involved presenting oral hygiene and hand washing teaching modules to over 150 school aged children. As part of another service project, students delivered vegetables to the women and children of a resource-limited village outside of Antigua. Along with the women of the community, the group attended a presentation on the importance of nutrition and health. Then, students accompanied the families back to their homes to deliver the vegetables. On two other days, students visited different barrios and worked in the Corazon de los Niños clinics, assessing patients, monitoring height, weight, and blood pressure, and triaging patients for assessment by the local physician. They saw over 40 patients at one clinic and over 100 at the second, all of whom had limited or no access to health care without the services provided by the Corazon de los Niños clinic.
