6th Annual Music On Monarch Way

Free family concerts on Monarch Way from June 29 to July 27

NORFOLK, Va. - (May 2013) - Old Dominion University Real Estate Foundation and The University Village are hosting the 6th Annual Music On Monarch Way concert series. These Saturday evening concerts are held on the green lawn behind the Ted Constant Convocation Center along Monarch Way in Norfolk from June 29 to July 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

June 29 - Bartones - Rock & Soul
Bruce Gray and Nick Bonis of The Jailtones joined forces with Robin Miller, David Hunter and Michael Mosgrove of The Barflys to fill a distinct void in the local music scene--the excitement of 60s and early 70s rock and soul. The band has been steadily and successfully entertaining local audiences for three years and counting.

July 6 - Michael Clark Band - Rhythm & Blues
What started as a blues/rock guitar band evolved into an all-out R&B revue. Tracy Clark's vocals and stage presence, coupled with one of the tightest rhythm sections in the area and one of the funkiest horn sections on the East Coast, provides all the elements for a great musical experience. In the classic tradition of The Ike and Tina Turner Revue, the band incorporates many different musical styles into their show. Whether honoring the original rendition of a classic number or performing an original tune, the music is presented in the band's own funky style.

July 13 - Major and The Monbacks - Rock n' Soul
Major and the Monbacks are the newest torch bearers of the old "Norfolk Sound," following a long line of musicians with a sound that bridges the gap between the R&B of Gary U.S. Bonds, the rockabilly of Gene Vincent, and the modern garage pop of Dr. Dog to create an exciting brew of rock n' soul. With four vocalists, a hypeman, and a lively horn section, the Monbacks have revived the party infused energy of Southern soul, blending old-school style with danceable pop melodies, ska and soulful horn riffs.

July 20 - Seth Stainback & Roosterfoot - Rockin' Roots Music
Seth is a native Texan replanted and grown in the Carolina Clay. Everything that moves is a rhythm, and every noise is a melody. From wheels churning down the interstate to eight-pound hammers against the steel hull of a warship, every day is a song. The CD, Earth & Worm, was nominated as best local CD of the year at the VEER Music awards along with three other nominations for Stainback and the group.

July 27 - 12 South - Classic Rock & Blues
Award-winning singer/songwriter John Huber is joined by the area's finest veteran rockers Frank McPhillips (drums), Jamie Jones (guitar), and Matt Thornton (bass) to deliver a raw, powerful, high-energy performance covering classic to current rock, blues and Americana plus originals.
