ODU ENGINEERING, DEPARTMENTS AMONG TOP 100 IN RESEARCH
Of the top 100 academic categories in total R&D expenditures at ODU, four come from the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology. They are civil engineering (70), electrical engineering (29), engineering (88), and mechanical engineering (29).
In federal R&D expenditures, ODU had10 academic areas that cracked the Top 100, and four of them were new this year - representing the College of Engineering, civil engineering (76), and is joined by environmental, (100), mathematics (74) and social science (82). Others were education (36), electrical engineering (41), engineering (97), mechanical engineering (39), non-science and non-engineering (61) and oceanography (36).
The latest research and development (R&D) expenditures data released by the National Science Foundation (NSF) show that Old Dominion attained Top 100 rankings in 18 academic areas and stands now at 105th in the country for total R&D expenditures among public institutions, 25 positions higher than it was eight years ago.
Mohammad Karim, vice president for research, said that during the past eight years the university also has moved up 35 positions in R&D to 146th in the country among all institutions, both public and private. During that same period in another category for universities with no medical schools, ODU gained 16 positions to 55th.
