IMAGE AWARDS GIVEN BY OLD DOMINION NAACP CHAPTER
Students, groups and their advisers were recognized for outstanding work during the Old Dominion University NAACP Chapter Image Awards, "A Glimpse Ahead: Preparation, Advancement and Success," April 21 at the Old Dominion Field House.
Actor and social activist Danny Glover received the chapter's Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.
Other award winners were:
Best Student Organization President Award: Eric Barreto of Norfolk, Latino Student Alliance
A founder of the LSA, Barreto has "a vision and a passion for providing an environment for people of Latin descent to feel comfortable in the organization, while celebrating their heritage, culture, and intellectual prowess," according to nomination materials.
Advisers of the Year Award: ReNee Dunman and Traci Ellis, both of Virginia Beach, Old Dominion NAACP Chapter.
Dunman, director of the Office of Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action, and Ellis, assistant director, assisted the chapter during numerous changes on its executive board throughout the academic year.
Best Student Organization: Latino Student Alliance, Zeta Tau Alpha.
The LSA raised funds to provide services for minority AIDS victims and collected toys during Christmas for refugee children.
Zeta Tau Alpha raised money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and maintains 43rd Street from Colley Avenue to Powhatan Avenue as part of Norfolk's street adoption program.
Community Outreach Award: Alpha Phi Alpha, Epsilon Pi Chapter, Norfolk State University.
The group's community projects include the March of Dimes, promoting higher education at area high schools, community clean-up projects and voter registration and blood drives.
Alumna of the Year: Sandra Olanitori of Chesapeake.
Olanitori, who received her master's degree in community health from Old Dominion in 1985, this May will complete her second two-year term as president of the university's Black Alumni Council.
Hall of Fame Award: Monarch Dance Team.
The team has won national and local dance competitions. It sponsored discussions during Women's History Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Week.
Chapter's Choice Awards: Inez Fuller of Norfolk and Carolyn Ward of Chesapeake.
The women have helped the board stay in touch with its advisers and assisted with projects.
President James V. Koch Image Award: Dr. Hugo Owens of Chesapeake.
Owens, the first African-American rector of Old Dominion, was chosen for the award because of his many accomplishments as a social activist in the African-American community and in higher education.
