SPORTS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM IS ACCREDITED

Old Dominion University's graduate sports management program recently received program approval and accreditation from the North American Society for Sport Management, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the Sport Management Program Review Council.

An emphasis area in the master's program in physical education, the sports management program prepares students for roles in sports management and administration. Approximately 60 students are currently enrolled in the
program.

The accreditation makes Old Dominion's graduate sports management program the only approved program of its kind in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region, according to Robert Case, the program's coordinator. Only 22 other programs in the country have been approved by national organizations. Old Dominion's undergraduate sports management program, which currently enrolls about 90 students, was approved last summer.

"It is an honor for the Old Dominion sports management program to receive this accreditation from the national organizations NASSM and NASPE," Case said. "It reflects the commitment that Old Dominion has in meeting national competency requirements for our students."

Achieving accreditation involved a four-year process of updating the graduate and undergraduate curricula, Case said. New courses were added and old courses underwent significant revisions.

The accreditation is for a seven-year period.
