ALUMNA ALMA MARTINEZ FALLON NAMED LEADING WOMAN IN TECHNOLOGY BY ENGINEERING MAGAZINES

Old Dominion University alumna Alma Martinez Fallon, manager of planning and manufacturing engineering for steel fabrication at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), has been named one of America's leading minority women in technology by Hispanic Engineer, U.S. Black Engineer and Information Technology magazines.

Fallon was recognized for her achievements at the Fifth Annual Women of Color Technology Awards Conference last month. In her nomination letter, John Shephard, vice president of manufacturing and materials at NNS, stated she has "made outstanding contributions and leadership in improving planning and manufacturing processes for hull fabrication. She is an outstanding role model" and an adamant proponent of women in technology.

Fallon received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Old Dominion in 1987 and a master's degree in engineering management from George Washington University.

In 1997, she received the Society of Women Engineers Distinguished New Engineer Award, given nationally to only five women, and was named the Peninsula Engineering Council Young Engineer of the Year in 1999. She is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Association of University Women.
