Old Dominion University to Mark Constitution Day with Collaborative Concert

Old Dominion University will mark Constitution Day with a collaborative concert exploring the concept of truth through music and mixed media.

"What Is Truth? An Interactive Brass and Media Concert for Constitution Day" will take place Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Diehn Center for the Performing Arts, Room 1201.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed each year to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.

The concert will be led by Mike Hall, professor in the ODU F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music and Conn-Selmer Trombone Performing Artist, and guest artist Ronnie Ingle, professor of trumpet at the University of North Dakota.

It will feature live and recorded music with lyrics by Johnny Cash, and works by J.S. Bach, Jacob TV, David Sampson, Ben Hase, Peter Meechan, Thomas Kelly, Matthew Murchison, Steven Bryant, Mark Phillips and Kit Turnbull.

"Our goals are to promote deep thought on the nature of truth and to recognize how current beliefs about truth comport with the reality of the world around us, particularly as we interpret important documents like the U.S. Constitution," Hall said.

The event is free and open to the public. It will also count as a recital attendance credit for music students.

Later this month, ODU's Department of Political Science and Geography will host "Shaping America: How the Constitution Makes America What it Is."

It will take place Sept. 20 from 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. in the Batten Arts and Letters Building, Room 1012, and will feature ODU's Athena King, Michelle Kundmueller, Ben Melusky, Jesse Richman and Aaron Karp.
