U.S. News & World Report Cites ODU in its Rankings of Best Graduate Schools for 2020

By Joe Garvey

The Darden College of Education & Professional Studies and six Old Dominion University graduate programs have been cited by U.S. News & World Report in its rankings of the Best Graduate Schools in the nation for 2020.

The Darden College of Education & Professional Studies was ranked No. 93, up from 105th in the 2019 rankings.

Two other programs are ranked in the top 100 nationally: aerospace engineering (No. 61; it was not listed in the rankings in 2019) and part-time master of business administration (No. 65, up from 87th in 2019).

The other ODU programs that made the rankings were public administration, No. 109; civil engineering, No. 113; mechanical engineering, No. 121; and electrical engineering, No. 148.

"The updated rankings confirm the steady rise of Old Dominion University's graduate profile," said Robert Wojtowicz, dean of the Graduate School. "What's most significant is that we're excelling as an institution not just in one area, but across numerous disciplines."

Each year, U.S. News ranks professional school programs in business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing, including specialties in each area.

The Best Graduate Schools rankings in these areas are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators, which measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students.

The data for the rankings in all six disciplines come from statistical surveys of more than 2,054 programs and from reputation surveys sent to more than 22,018 academics and professionals in the fall of 2018 and early this year.

Earlier this academic year, U.S. News & World Report named ODU a Best National University and a Top Public School. Old Dominion also was ranked among the Best Undergraduate Engineering and Business Programs.

In January, the publication ranked ODU among the top 100 institutions in the categories of Best Online Bachelor's Programs, Best Online MBA Programs and Best Online Nursing Programs.
