ODU's Tim Seibles, Virginia's Poet Laureate, to Appear on 'With Good Reason'

By Brendan O'Hallarn

Old Dominion University's Tim Seibles, selected in 2016 as Poet Laureate of Virginia, will be interviewed on an upcoming episode of "With Good Reason," the radio program dedicated to spotlighting the scholarship of Virginia's public universities.

Seibles, appointed to the ceremonial position by Gov. Terry McAuliffe last July, will be featured on the program "Get Rhythm," which will air at 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 2 on WHRV-FM 89.5 in Hampton Roads.

The show also airs in different time slots on nearly 75 public radio stations from coast to coast. Broadcast times are posted on the "With Good Reason" website. Produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities in Charlottesville, "With Good Reason" features the research of Virginia's public colleges and universities.

Seibles, a professor of English, joined the faculty of Old Dominion in 1995 and was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2012. Sheri Reynolds, the chair of the English department, calls him "a visionary writer and teacher" and "a generous mentor to his students."

Virginia's General Assembly established the position of Virginia poet laureate in 1936. Previous poet laureates have included Pulitzer Prize winners Claudia Emerson and Rita Dove.

On "With Good Reason," Seibles discusses "One Turn Around the Sun," his new anthology of poems. The collection includes a tribute and farewell to his elderly parents and describes the first appearances of the twilight of life.

The program also features Ken Bartram of the University of Mary Washington, who is on the hunt for the Holy Grail of American symphonic music - long-lost works by master composers that are housed in the Library of Congress.

Audio files of the full program and its companion news feature will be posted the week of the show to the "With Good Reason" website. Faculty and other fans of the program are encouraged to follow "With Good Reason" on Facebook or subscribe to the show Podcast.

Hosted by Sarah McConnell, "With Good Reason" has twice won the Gabriel Award for Best Documentary/Public Affairs Program. It also has ben the recipient of top honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and a second-place award in the Public Radio News Directors competition.
