ODU Alum, Carolina Panthers Executive, to Deliver Executive-in-Residence Address

By Brendan O'Hallarn

He's gone from Old Dominion University to the National Football League.

For the past 12 years, Mike Mahoney '91 has been the sports marketing executive for the Carolina Panthers, connecting with companies and agencies seeking to explore sponsorships with the NFL team.

Mahoney will deliver a Strome College of Business Executive-in-Residence lecture next week on the Old Dominion campus. The lecture will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28 in Room 1002 of Constant Hall on 49th Street. The free event will run from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. Pizza and beverages will be provided.

"We know many of our business students aspire to work in professional sports, particularly the National Football League," said Jeff Tanner, dean of ODU's Strome College of Business. "Mike is a case study example about how developing an advanced business skill set - in his case, sales and marketing - can help graduates realize their career goals."

Mahoney, who graduated with a degree in economics from Old Dominion, has an extensive background in sales, working at FedEx as a national account executive and with SAP as an account executive, selling supply chain solutions to Fortune 500 companies.

His work with the Panthers involves engagement through a variety of marketing platforms and customized packages to help reach fans, whether in or out of season. Some of the companies he has brokered sponsorships with include Krispy Kreme, Frito Lay, AT&T and Allen Tate Realtors.

Established in 2001, the Landmark Executive-in-Residence program is funded by an endowment from a group of former Landmark Communications executives in honor of Frank Batten Sr., former chairman of the executive committee of the Landmark board and first rector of the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors.

The program is dedicated to bringing accomplished business leaders, many of whom are University alumni, to campus to share their history and vision, giving students the opportunity to learn firsthand about the strategies and experiences that forge great ethical global leaders.
