Fans of ODU to Have a Big Blue Flashback at 2016 Homecoming

By Brendan O'Hallarn

To get into the spirit of Old Dominion University's 2016 Homecoming festivities, you can call it groovy. Or totally tubular. Or neato bonito.

The theme of this year's Sept. 19-24 week of spirit and camaraderie is Big Blue Flashback. A series of retro events are planned, including a diner-style event, a dodgeball tournament (memories of middle school), and a flashback-inspired Homecoming parade.

The week will culminate with the annual Homecoming football game against the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, at 3:30 p.m. at S.B. Ballard Stadium at Foreman Field on Saturday, Sept. 24. It will be the first home game for the football Monarchs since Sept. 4, so the team's 50th straight sellout is expected.

Other highlights of the Homecoming week include the annual Alumni Honors Dinner Thursday, Sept. 22, and the dedication Friday, Sept. 23 of the University's first standalone dining hall, the Kate and John R. Broderick Commons

On Monday, Sept. 19th, Homecoming will kick off with a 50s diner-style event from 12 - 3 p.m. and a block party from 7 - 10 p.m. on the Runte Quad in front of the Student Recreation Center. On Tuesday Sept. 20th, the University's first-ever dodgeball tournament for students will begin at 5 p.m. at the Rec Center.
