Alumnus Ken Ampy, Former BOV Member, Appointed to SCHEV Board

By Brendan O'Hallarn

Former Old Dominion University Board of Visitors member Kenneth E. Ampy, co-founder and CEO of Astyra Corporation, has been appointed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia board.

Ampy, of Midlothian, Virginia, earned his B.S. in computer science from Old Dominion in 1990, serving two terms on the University's Board of Visitors, from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2013.

With his former college roommate Samuel Young, Ampy founded Astyra Corp. in 1997. Young, company president, and Ampy are two-time winners of Entrepreneur of the Year from Richmond's Metropolitan Business League.

Headquartered in Richmond, Astyra is a national provider of information technology staffing and consulting services. The company is also a multiple recipient of the Lasting Impressions Award, which is given by the Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council.

In his role with the company, Ampy is responsible for the company's overall leadership, direction and vision; raising the business community's awareness of the corporation.

Ampy was appointed to the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors by Gov. Mark Warner, and re-appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine. Ampy served as chairman of the Academic and Research Advancement Committee, chairman of the Student Advancement Committee and secretary of the Board.

In 2014, McAuliffe appointed Ampy to the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park Authority. In this role, Ampy serves as the chairman of the governance committee.

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) makes higher education public policy recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly in such areas as capital and operating budget planning, enrollment projections, institutional technology needs, and student financial aid.

SCHEV administers a variety of educational programs that benefit students, faculty, parents, and taxpayers. SCHEV serves as a catalyst to promote greater access, quality, affordability, and accountability throughout the system. SCHEV also helps policymakers, college administrators, and other concerned leaders work cooperatively and constructively to advance educational excellence.
