ODU Athletics and Max Media Announce New Three-Year Agreement

Old Dominion University director of athletics Wood Selig announced June 1 that Monarch football, and men's and women's basketball games will continue to be heard on Max Media Radio stations in Hampton Roads for the next three years.

Old Dominion University Sports Properties and Max Media of Hampton Roads entered into a three-year agreement that extends through the 2018-19 seasons, with an option to renew for two additional years through 2020-21. ODUSP is the multi-media rights holder for ODU athletics, a property of OUTFRONT Media Sports, Inc.

"We are pleased to continue our great relationship with the Max Media Group and provide a great listening experience for our fans," says Selig. "ESPN 94.1 FM has great reach and great programming for sports fans throughout Hampton Roads and we are also excited about new programming opportunities with all the MAX stations."

In addition to broadcasting ODU football, and men's and women's basketball games, the Bobby Wilder Football Coaches Show will continue to air for 12 weeks in the fall, along with a minimum of 20 baseball and all post-season games, 33-weeks of "Monarch Minute" vignettes, interviews and updates from Dr. Wood Selig, and coverage of conference media days and football signing day.

"Everyone at Max Media is thrilled to be continuing our incredible partnership with ODU athletics. As a locally owned and operated media organization, it's been a thrill to watch the university grow so successfully up close!," says Max Media of Hampton Roads general manager Dave Paulus.

"Starting with the ODU athletics flagship radio station, WVSP, 94.1 ESPN, and continuing throughout our entire group of stations, we know the value of our relationship with ODU. My thanks and appreciation to athletic director Dr. Wood Selig and everyone within the University's athletic department for the ability to continue this amazing relationship," adds Paulus.

The MAX group includes WVSP 94.1 FM (ESPN), the flagship station for ODU athletics, WGH AM 1310, WVHT 100.5 FM, WVBW 92.9 FM and WGH 97.3 FM. Where conflicts occur on 94.1 FM, games and programming will be heard on WGH 1310 AM. MAX stations, and previous owners, have broadcast Monarch athletic events since 1991 beginning with women's basketball games, men's basketball games in 1993 and football in 2009. ODUSP will own the advertising inventory in all ODU broadcasts.

A one-hour pre-game show will precede all ODU football games, anchored by the voice of the Monarchs Ted Alexander, along with Rick Kiefner. Alexander and Andy Mashaw will begin their eighth season calling Monarch football games, with sideline commentary added by Doug Ripley, who also serves as the play-by-play voice for women's basketball games and selected baseball games. Alexander and ODU Hall of Famer Dave Twardzik will make the call on Monarch basketball games, along with ODU great Billy Mann on the 30-minute pre-game show, while former Lady Monarch assistant coach Susan Montgomery joins Ripley on women's basketball games.
