Flutist Jim Walker Joins ODU Faculty Monday in Diehn Concert Series

Acclaimed jazz flutist Jim Walker will perform at Old Dominion University's Chandler Recital Hall on Monday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. as part of the F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series.

Walker, formerly the principal flutist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will be joined by Old Dominion music faculty Oksana Lutsyshyn on piano and the John Toomey Trio. Toomey is chair of ODU's Department of Music.

Walker is a professor at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. He is a long-time studio flutist for jazz/pop sessions, television and motion pictures and can be heard on more than 600 sound tracks.

Walker played with Paul McCartney at the 2002 Academy Awards, and his jazz/classical quartet "Free Flight" made numerous appearances on "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson."

Walker, who travels extensively to give clinics and master classes, will also conduct a free master class at the Chandler Recital Hall at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for students and $15 for the general public. They can be purchased at ODUArtsTix.com or by calling (757) 683-5305.

Made possible by an endowment established by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and a generous gift from F. Ludwig Diehn, concerts in this series bring significant classical and jazz musicians to Hampton Roads.

Next in the series will be the Harlem Quartet, with violinist Ida Kavafian, on Feb. 29.
