Preparing Ph.D. Students for Success in Research

When students get accepted into Ph.D programs, are they ready for the competition that will occur? Have they submitted appropriate manuscripts for conferences and later for journal publication? Will their work be competitive with other doctoral candidates?

John Ford, professor of marketing and international business and director of the Ph.D. program in business administration for the Strome College of Business, is an Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University. His lecture, "Preparing your Ph.D. Students for Success in Research," will be offered on Thursday, April 16 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the conference room at the Learning Commons @ Perry Library as part of the Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning series.

Ford will share ways in which students might best approach the research process, so they will be better prepared to interview with academic institutions, having already published in academic journals.

This final conversation of the academic year is open to all.

The Provost's conversations on Teaching and Learning is a series of brown-bag lunch discussions. At each conversation, an award-winning ODU professor will illustrate one aspect of his/her teaching, and then will lead a discussion session. These conversations, coordinated by The Center for Learning Technologies, are designed to provide faculty members from all across the campus with the opportunity to share, to think, and to reflect on a wide range of teaching and learning issues.
