ODU Tuition and Fee Trends Demonstrate Sensible Fiscal Management

Old Dominion's tuition and fee trends over the past four years show a cumulative increase for both in-state and out-of-state undergraduates that is the lowest among all of Virginia's research and doctoral institutions.

This trend was revealed in Old Dominion University's $582 million Operating Budget & Plan 2015-2016, which was unanimously approved by the Board of Visitors on April 23 and includes about $8.7 million in new state funding.

During the period from 2011 to 2015, the University's cumulative increase for in-state undergraduates was $1,932 compared to an average of $3,013 for other doctoral institutions. Additionally, the average increase for Old Dominion out-of-state undergraduates was $5,652 in contrast to the $7,204 average for other doctoral institutions.

In the 2015-16 budget document, tuition and student activity fees for Virginia residents was set at $9,480, an increase of $255 per semester or $510 per year from 2014-15.

During times of increasing scrutiny of higher education costs, it is important to note that Old Dominion is the only doctoral university in the Commonwealth of Virginia with in-state undergraduate tuition and fees that are less than $10,000 per year.

This budget analysis demonstrates that Old Dominion's sensible fiscal management policies have kept the University at the forefront, in terms of affordability and accessibility.
