University Recognizes Outstanding Scholars for Fall Semester

Christina Rodriguez, who is graduating Dec. 12 with a degree in environmental health, is this semester's Outstanding University Scholar.

The Old Dominion University Alumni Association presents awards, following each spring and fall semester, for academic achievement in the University's six colleges. The awards were presented Thursday, Dec. 10 during an event at Webb University Center.

Rodriguez, who is from Cleveland, Ohio, listed Charlene Brassington, lecturer in community and environmental health, as her inspirational faculty member.

"Professor Brassington is an inspiration to me," Rodriguez said. "I aspire to be a successful industrial hygienist like her. She is always able and willing to give advice and answer all of my questions to help prepare me for my future career."

For the College of Arts and Letters, this semester's Outstanding College Scholar is Katelyn Anderson. The aspiring K-6 teacher from Virginia Beach listed Jody Sommerfeldt, senior lecturer of instructional design and technology, as her inspirational faculty member.

Jonathan Armstrong, from Williamsburg, is the Outstanding College Scholar from the Darden College of Education. Graduating with a BS in human services, Armstrong listed Tiffany Cooley, adjunct instructional faculty member in counselling and human services, as his inspirational faculty member.

Mary Elizabeth Barrow, a biology graduate with a minor in chemistry, is the Outstanding College Scholar for the College of Sciences. Barrow, from Roanoke, listed Marie Melzer, lecturer of chemstry, as her inspirational faculty member.

Eric Crandall, a civil engineering graduate originally from western New York, is the Outstanding College Scholar for the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology. Crandall listed Gary Schafran, professor of civil and environmental engineering, as his inspirational faculty member.

Norfolk's Ronaville Gutierrez, a finance major, is the Strome College of Business Outstanding College Scholar. Gutierrez said Maureen Stiner, lecturer of finance, was her inspirational Old Dominion faculty member.

The six Outstanding College Scholars, along with Christina Rodriguez, the University's Outstanding Scholar for the fall semester, will be recognized during the University's 123rd Commencement exercises, on Dec. 12.
