ODU First Lady Kate Broderick and Student Athletes Recognized at Basketball Game

Old Dominion University First Lady Kate Broderick was recognized Thursday evening for her dedication to the academic success of ODU's student athletes during the men's basketball game against Marshall University. During the half-time presentation, more than 140 student athletes who earned Dean's List honors during the fall semester were also honored.

Kate Broderick joined ODU Athletic Director Wood Selig at center court for the "very special recognition" of her work with the Office of Educational Accessibility. Since 2005, Broderick served as office director and assistant director before assuming her current role as faculty and community liaison.

Broderick recently announced she will step down from her position in the Office of Educational Accessibility to devote more time to her recent appointment to the Virginia State Rehabilitation Council as well as other campus and community committees working to improve access to higher education for students with medical, psychological or learning disabilities.

Selig presented Broderick with an ODU athletic letter - a symbolic gesture recognizing her dedication and service to the educational success of ODU's student athletes during the past 12 years.

Many of those students were also on hand for a special presentation honoring their academic achievements.

During the break in the game, 144 student athletes gathered on the basketball court where they were congratulated by ODU President John R. Broderick, Kate Broderick and Wood Selig for earning Dean's List honors during the fall 2013 semester.

The group represented 30 percent of all student athletes at ODU. Among them, 16 earned perfect 4.0 Grade Point Averages (GPA's), and 12 ODU sports teams had combined GPA's of a 3.0 or higher.
