Monarchs Assemble: ODU Homecoming 2014 Begins Nov. 3

Old Dominion University has grown and developed like it is populated by superheroes. Those superheroes are urged to don their costumes for Monarchs Assemble: ODU Homecoming 2014, Nov. 3-9 on the ODU campus.

The superhero-themed Homecoming 2014 is a leap over a tall building compared to the celebration's modest roots. Homecoming started in the 1960s as a single-day event, growing in tandem with the University into a week-long highlight of the fall calendar.

Homecoming received a Man of Steel-sized boost with the introduction of football on campus in 2009. For the sixth straight year, events will culminate with the annual Homecoming game against Florida International University. It kicks off at 3:30 p.m. at S.B. Ballard Stadium at Foreman Field.

Besides the Homecoming game, a diverse program of events is planned for the week, including: the annual Homecoming Concert at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Friday, Nov. 7, which will feature Schoolboy Q & YG with special guest BJ The Chicago Kid; and Monarch Day, Nov. 6 on Kaufman Mall, a free event featuring hours of superhero themed food, games and the presentation of the 2014 Homecoming Court.

For alumni, the annual Alumni Honors Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center. Members of the class of 1964 will be recognized for 50 years as Old Dominion University alumni with induction into the Golden Pride. Proceeds from the event support ODU Alumni Association programs, including the Adam Thoroughgood Scholarship. For information or to purchase tickets, contact ODU's Office of Alumni Relations at 757-683-3097 or odualumni@odu.edu.

On Friday, Nov. 7 at 12:30 p.m., Old Dominion University's Founders' Day Luncheon will be held in the Big Blue Room of the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Share in the celebration as the University and Town 'N' Gown honor individuals who have made a significant impact on the University and Hampton Roads. Tickets may be purchased by contacting the Office of University Events at 757-683-5759.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Hall of Fame Breakfast will be held in the Hall of Fame Lobby of the Constant Center. For information or to purchase tickets, contact Jackie Barrow at 757-683-3359.

Also, at 10 a.m. that day, tailgate lots open for the Homecoming football game. At 11 a.m., the annual Homecoming Parade will begin. Student organizations, bands, business and civic groups come together in this annual tradition. Prime viewing spots are located on 49th Street and Hampton Boulevard.

At 12:30 p.m., the Alumni Tailgate Tent in Kaufman Mall opens. All alumni are invited to come by and tailgate with fellow Monarchs. Advance reservations are preferred; contact Alumni Relations at 757-683-3097.

The game, Old Dominion's first home football game in a month, is the 40th straight sellout. It will be available on Cox Ch. 2 (MyTV) and 1002 (HD), on FIOS Ch. 11 and 511 (HD), on DirecTV Ch. 33 and on Charter Ch. 9 and 709 (HD).

On radio, the game can be heard on ESPN Radio 94.1 FM in Hampton Roads, Sports FM 100.5 in Richmond, and WBRG 104.5 FM, 1050 AM in Lynchburg. At halftime, the 2014 ODU Homecoming king and queen will be announced.

The annual Homecoming Ball will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the North Café of Webb Center.
