Panel Discussion Looks at Writing Across Academic Disciplines

Researchers in completely different disciplines share a need to communicate their findings effectively, a task made more difficult when researchers from different areas team up on projects.

As a resource for faculty, Old Dominion University's Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) is hosting a panel discussion "Interdisciplinary Writing across ODU" on Thursday, Oct. 16, in the conference room of the Learning Commons @ Perry Library. The panel runs from 12:30-1:30 p.m., and drinks and dessert will be provided.

The panel, part of CLT's "Connect with Colleagues" brown bag lunch series, features Stacie Ringleb, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Tatyana Lobova, senior lecturer of biological sciences, and Kaa Hinton-Johnson, associate professor of teaching and learning. The panel is moderated by Joyce Armstrong, assistant director for teaching and learning at CLT.

CLT's Connect with Colleagues series offers ODU's faculty members a chance to learn, with their colleagues, ways to engage their students and strengthen their teaching.

This semester's installment in the series is a panel discussion with several members of the faculty who have participated in ODU's QEP: Improving Interdisciplinary Writing workshops and have been adding writing to their varied curricula. Participants are encouraged to bring their colleagues and join in the free-ranging discussion.

The discussion is meant to complement the visit of Patrick Bahls to Old Dominion University. Bahls is director of the UNC-Asheville Honors Program, associate professor of mathematics, and has led more than two dozen workshops and seminars on writing in the disciplines, at conferences nationwide.

Bahls will be offering Improving Writing in the Disciplines workshops several times during his visit to ODU:

Thursday, Oct. 16

10am-12:30pm in the Webb River Rooms (STEM Faculty focused)

1:30-4pm in the Webb River Rooms (Humanities focused)

Friday, Oct. 17

1:30-4 p.m. in the Conference Room of Perry Library (open to all faculty)
