ODU Introduces New Degree Track for Health Services Administration Concentration

The Old Dominion University College of Health Sciences has a new track for its Health Services Administration concentration and is seeking applicants for the spring 2014 semester.

The new degree track is designed for students without health care experience, a license or certification who want to be in a nonclinical leadership role in health services administration, said Jacqueline E. Sharpe, the program's director and a naval officer veteran with 42 years of experience in the health care field as a licensed professional.

ODU is one of only 45 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada - including four in Virginia - that are fully certified by the American Universities Program in Health Administration (AUPHA).

The AUPHA certification process involves peer review to ensure quality and consistency in undergraduate health care administration education. Certification requires evidence of well-qualified faculty, resources for students and faculty, a well-defined curriculum of study, an internship and evidence of stated competencies acquired by students, Sharpe said. She added that nearly all of the full-time and adjunct faculty members in ODU's undergraduate program hold doctoral degrees.

Health Services Administration students, with the required GPA, are eligible for invitation for induction into Upsilon Phi Delta honor society. The mission of Upsilon Phi Delta is to recognize, reward and encourage academic excellence in the study of health administration.
