President Broderick Slated as Guest on ‘HearSay with Cathy Lewis’ Sept. 5

Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick will be interviewed Thursday, Sept. 5, on WHRV-FM's "HearSay with Cathy Lewis," discussing ODU's successes and goals in a challenging environment for higher education.

Broderick will expand on the themes of achievement, campus growth and ODU's abiding commitment to service articulated in his State of the University address Aug. 20.

In the address, Broderick announced a $10 million gift from the Strome Family Foundation, which will help fund an entrepreneurial curriculum in ODU's College of Business and Public Administration, to help nurture a culture of entrepreneurship among its students.

With $325 million in capital projects started or completed since 2008, and growth in research funding for the university at an all-time high, Broderick said the economic impact of ODU for the commonwealth of Virginia now exceeds $2.1 billion per year.

He also noted that the 2,700 freshmen who recently arrived on campus are students at a university scarcely recognizable from a generation earlier. "Just as the region has grown and become a cosmopolitan crossroads, so, too, has the university. Prospective students see our dynamic culture and want to be a part of it. As some like to say on campus, 'This is not your father's ODU,'" Broderick said.

ODU's eighth president, Broderick has overseen a significant portion of the university's growth.

As president, he guides ODU's six colleges, more than 10 economic development and research centers, and numerous partnerships with government, military and business organizations, and agencies. He oversees an operating budget in excess of $526 million and more than 2,500 faculty and staff members.

Shortly after becoming president, Broderick introduced a university-wide initiative to set a new standard for student success and student learning, which included a $10.2 million Student Success Center and Learning Commons and the creation of a vice president position and division for student engagement and enrollment services. Additionally, he has led efforts to keep the university affordable and accessible, while maintaining academic standards. He was awarded the 2012 American College Personnel Association's Contribution to Higher Education Award, one of the national organization's highest honors, for his leadership in student success initiatives.

The university's Board of Visitors voted in 2012 to extend his contract to 2017.

"HearSay with Cathy Lewis" is WHRV-FM's locally produced, public affairs radio call-in program that discusses issues important to Hampton Roads. The show airs every Monday through Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. on WHRV-FM (89.5), reaching more than 52,000 listeners from Richmond to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
