ODU Hosts Military Family Education Forum July 10

The Hon. Terrie L. Suit, Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security for the State of Virginia, will give the keynote address at a July 10 event at Old Dominion University looking at the range of services provided to military families through an academic setting.

The Military-Connected Child Education Expo, Luncheon and Workshop is being hosted at the Ted Constant Convocation Center by Old Dominion University's Center for Educational Partnerships.

It begins with registration and an expo starting at 11 a.m., continues through a luncheon where Suit will be the featured speaker, and includes military-conscious schools workshops throughout the afternoon, led by ODU faculty and representatives of the university's TEAMS (Teaching, Education and Advocacy for Military-connected Students) initiative. Other groups participating in the workshops include the Military Child Education Coalition, the Virginia National Guard Youth Program, Fleet and Family Services and the National Military Family Association.

Other groups that will participate in the Expo include Blue Star Families, the USO, Red Cross, National Military Families Association, and the University of Southern California's Building Capacity initiative.

A 2005 Old Dominion University graduate in political science, Suit is a former state Delegate who was appointed to her cabinet position by Gov. Robert F. McDonnell in 2010. In her role, Suit is responsible for portfolios ranging from emergency preparedness, to security threats, to services for the state's veterans.

ODU President John R. Broderick will also speak at the event's luncheon, along with Capt. Michael "Jake" Johansson, commander of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads for the United States Navy. A Navy pilot, Johansson was appointed to his current post in April 2012, after sea tours in Hawaii, and shore tours with Policy and Operations, Patrol and Reconnaissance Force Pacific, and as Naval Aide to the Vice President of the United States.

Parking for the event will be available in Garage C (at the corner of Hampton Blvd and 43rd St).
