SIAM Conference March 24 Bringing Math Awareness to ODU

Researchers and professionals with a keen interest in mathematics will gather on the Old Dominion University campus on Saturday, March 24, for the annual SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) Conference for Math Awareness.

The event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in various venues of the Oceanography and Physics Building, will feature three guest speakers. In addition to their talks, the speakers will be available for interaction with the students and math professionals in attendance.

Suzanne Lenhart, professor of mathematics at the University of Tennessee will speak on "Mixing It Up: Discrete and Continuous Optimal Control for Biological Models." Sastry Pantula, director of the Division of Mathematics, National Science Foundation will present "Big Data and Big Opportunities." Bonita Saunders of the Applied and Computational Mathematics Division, National Institute of Standards and Technology will also address the full conference.

In breakout sessions between the main talks, attendees will be invited to give brief presentations about their math projects and research.

"The conference offers attendees the opportunity to share their work and get feedback from others, and to learn about areas of research in which others are working," said Amanda Working, president of the ODU student chapter of SIAM. She said ODU students, faculty and alumni in math-related jobs or fields of study are invited, as is anyone else from regional universities or the general public who is interested in math.

Co-sponsors with SIAM are the ODU Alumni Association and the ODU Office of Research. Others in the student chapter who are involved in coordinating the conference are Drew Posny, vice president; Panon Phuworawong, secretary; Pooja Sengupta, treasurer; and John Gounley, adviser. All of the SIAM student chapter officers are graduate students in ODU's Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

A $5 registration fee will cover a light lunch that will be served to attendees. For more information, contact Working at aworking@odu.edu.
