Atkinson to Discuss Rising Sea Levels as Guest on Hearsay
November 19, 2012
Larry Atkinson, the Slover Professor of Oceanography and director of the Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative at Old Dominion University, will be a guest Monday, Nov. 19, on WHRV-FM's (89.5) "HearSay with Cathy Lewis" from noon to 1 p.m. The topic of the program segment will be "The Rising Tide," referring to the risks Hampton Roads faces from sea level rise.
Other guests on the program segment will be Skip Stiles, executive director of Wetlands Watch, and Molly Mitchell, a researcher with the Center for Coastal Resources Management at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
An archive broadcast of the "HearSay" radio program can be downloaded at http://www.whro.org/home/publicradio/whrv/localprogramming/hearsay.
Atkinson and the other guests will discuss Hampton Roads being recently ranked among the top five most hurricane-vulnerable U.S. cities. While the region has been spared the brunt of the Atlantic's most powerful storms, it is home to vital and expensive infrastructure that is vulnerable to storm-surge related impacts, especially at a time when overall sea level is rising.
