Election Eve Talk Will Offer Young People Advice on Asserting Political Power

Coming just one day before the U.S. presidential election, a talk at Old Dominion University by author David Mindich will offer some timely food for thought. His address, for the "ODU Presents" lecture series, is titled "Living an Engaged Life: How Young People Can Assert Their Political Power and Take Control of Our Democracy."

Mindich, a college professor and the author of "Tuned Out: Why Americans Under 40 Don't Follow the News" (2004, Oxford University Press), will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, for "ODU Presents," a subseries of the university's President's Lecture Series. This new series features multidisciplinary speakers that support ODU's six colleges' research initiatives and community outreach efforts.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the North Cafeteria of Webb Center.

Mindich is a professor of media studies, journalism and digital arts at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., where he has taught since 1996.

A former CNN correspondent, he has written articles for The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Wilson Quarterly and Media Studies Journal. He is also the author of "Just the Facts: How 'Objectivity' Came to Define American Journalism."
