Tuition Assistance Process

Tuition Assistance (TA) is only available for Active Duty military members. Each military branch has a different process to request and submit for TA. Scroll down to find your military branch and follow the detailed steps to request Tuition Assistance. Before you submit, have you completed these three steps below?

U.S. Army Tuition Assistance

To ensure you're able to take advantage of the Tuition Assistance (TA) program, please submit your request 10 - 15 business days before each term. Requests are processed in the order in which it was received.

Annual Federal Tuition Assistance has a maximum of 16 semester hours per fiscal year up to $250 per semester hour. Soldiers may use TA to earn one or more degrees through the Master's level for a combined total of up to 130 SH at the undergraduate level (Associate's and Bachelor's), 39 SH for a Master's degree, and 21 SH for an academic certificate/diploma (undergraduate or graduate level).

Soldiers must maintain an Army GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate and 3.0 for graduate or higher when using TA.

U.S. Marine Corps Tuition Assistance

Tuition Assistance (TA) can be used for approved certificate and degree programs, only. TA will cover 100-percent of tuition up to $250 per credit hour.

Marines must apply for Marine Corps Tuition Assistance (TA) through the MyNavy Education portal. First, you must Contact your Marine Corps Voluntary Education Center to receive educational counseling. Then, schedule an appointment with your ODU academic advisor to determine which courses can be requested for TA funding.

Start your application 60-days in advance of the term start date. You may submit your TA before finishing your enrollment at Old Dominion University.

Note: TA does not cover books and other materials or academic instituion fees. It will not fund retakes of the same course. If you leave the service before class ends, withdraw or fail a course, you will have to provide reimbursement for any Tuituion Assistance funds already paid.

Note: Every TA application MUST be Command Approved prior to being forwarded to the Voluntary Education Center for final approval.

U.S. Navy Tuition Assistance

Tuition Assistance (TA) can be used for approved certificate and degree programs, only. TA will cover 100-percent of tuition up to $250 per credit hour.

Sailors must apply for Navy Tuition Assistance (TA) through the MyNavy Education portal. First, you must complete education counseling with a Navy College Education Counselor before requesting Tuition Assistance. Then, schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to determine which courses can be requested for TA funding.

Start your application 60-days in advance of the term start date. You may submit your TA before finishing your enrollment at Old Dominion University.

Note: TA does not cover books and other materials or academic instituion fees. It will not fund retakes of the same course. If you leave the service before class ends, withdraw or fail a course, you will have to provide reimbursement for any Tuituion Assistance funds already paid.

U.S. Air Force Tuition Assistance

The Air Force pays 100-percent of tuition, up to $250 per credit hour ($4,500 annually), in off-duty courses.

All Tuition Assistance (TA) requests must be approved by Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC) supervisors. All TA applications must be submitted 45 calendar days before and no later than 7 calendar days before the term start date.

Any TA not approved by their supervisor before the prescribed dates above will be auto-deleted. If this occurs, you'll be notified via email.

U.S. Coast Guard Tuition Assistance

The Air Force pays 100-percent of tuition, up to $250 per credit hour ($4,500 annually), in off-duty courses.

All Tuition Assistance (TA) requests must be approved by Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC) supervisors. All TA applications must be submitted 45 calendar days before and no later than 7 calendar days before the term start date.

Virginia Air National Guard Tuition Assistance

Applicants are encouraged to apply for all available federal benefits and Veterans Affairs entitlements before applying for state assistance. The State Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) is available for out-of-state online schools.

Virginia Air National Guard members can apply for State Tuition Assistance three times a year. Please submit your applications during the following time frames for their corresponding semester.

Virginia Army National Guard Tuition Assistance

Applicants are encouraged to apply for all available federal benefits and Veterans Affairs entitlements before applying for state assistance. The State Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) is available for out-of-state online schools.

Virginia Air National Guard members can apply for State Tuition Assistance three times a year. Please submit your applications during the following time frames for their corresponding semester.
