Hours of Operation & Access

Is the Language Learning Center open?

The LLC has moved to a remote learning environment to serve students, faculty, and the community until further notice.

What are the Hours of the LLC?

During the semester, the LLC is open daily: Mondays 9-7, Tuesdays 9-7, Wednesdays 9-5, Thursdays 9-5, Fridays 9-3. Summer 2020 Hours of Operation will include: Mondays-Thursdays from 12-4.

Is the LLC open on weekends?

The LLC is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. During summer sessions, the LLC is closed Fridays-Sundays.

Do I need an appointment?

Our virtual hours require that you make an appointment.

Is there someone to help me?

The LLC has a friendly, knowledgeable, and international staff to assist you with your world language learning questions and needs.

I am not a current student at ODU, may I still access the LLC?

The LLC staff is happy to serve students, faculty, and the Hampton Roads community.



Tutoring

Does the LLC offer tutoring

There are two options for tutoring depending on the language: (1) Remote LLC tutoring by appointment and (2) Tutor.com.

What are the Hours of the LLC?

How may I access remote tutoring at the LLC?

Remote tutoring opportunities are available by making an appointment online from our website's "Virtual Hours" at the Language Learning Center website.

Is there a cost associated with LLC tutoring?

All tutoring options are offered free to our students.

What languages are available for tutoring?

LLC remote tutoring during the semester is available for Chinese, French, German, and Japanese. Tutor.com is available for French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Check the website for up-to-date information on our website.

Are tutoring services one-on-one?

Tutoring sessions may be one-one or small group sessions depending on availability.

How long are tutoring sessions and how many times may I request tutoring?

Tutoring sessions are scheduled for 30-minutes and you may return as often as necessary.

Are tutors qualified?

Our LLC peer tutors are CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) trained undergraduate and graduate students who provide course specific tutoring. Peer tutors consult with our WL&C faculty.

May I provide feedback on my tutor and tutoring session?

The LLC welcomes your feedback to improve our services. Please complete the Tutoring Satisfaction Survey at our website.


Assessment

Where do I go to take the Language Placement Test?

The ODU Credentialing Center provides world language placement testing for French, German, Japanese, and Spanish and is located in the Student Success Center of the Library. Visit https://www.odu.edu/credentialing-center for more information and registration.

What is ACTFL-LTI Assessment?

American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages-Language Testing International. ACTFL is the Specialized Professional Association representing the foreign language specialty area of the Council of Teacher Education.

Why Do I need to take the ACTFL-LTI Assessment?

An official language certification from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) leads to increased job opportunities, instills confidence, and creates a significant professional advantage in the global marketplace.

What proficiency tests are required for me to take?

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at ODU requires that you take the (1) OPIc, (2) Listening Proficiency Test, and (3) Writing Proficiency Test.

When should I schedule my tests?

You may schedule your tests anytime during your senior year before graduation.

How do I schedule my test?

I am a graduating senior and need to complete the ACTFL-LTI assessment. How may I do this remotely?

LTI's remote proctored language assessments are designed to evaluate students' language proficiency anytime, anywhere, safely, and securely. You will be required to schedule your language proficiency testing with remote proctor.

How are the ACTFL-LTI assessments graded?

ACTFL-LTI assessments are rated by language professionals that have passed the rigorous ACTFL Tester Certification Process, one of the most selective and respected language proficiency tester trainings in the world.

After I complete the LTI, what do I receive?

You will receive an official certificate to include on your résumé, CV, and website

LLC Resources

Are there resources I can use on my own from home?

The LLC provides a myriad of solutions to enhance your world language learning at our website. If you are unsure of what to use or have specific needs, please make an appointment online.

Are there opportunities to converse with native speakers?

There are several platforms to use to practice speaking a world language, including, TalkAbroad (with a class only), Hello Talk, iTalkie, Tandem Language Exchange, and HiNative.

What are National Language Resource Centers?

Title VI Language Resource Centers (LRCs) support the nation's capacity for language teaching and learning. LRCs offer free or low-cost teaching materials, professional development opportunities, assessment and evaluation services, and more at the Language Resource Center site.

Does the LLC have a digital newspaper?

The Language Learning Center Daily is available online.

What is NewsMap?

NewsMap is a tool that lets you visualize global news in a nonlinear way from different countries in their language at the NewsMap site.

Community Outreach

Does the LLC offer community outreach events and opportunities?

The LLC offers Language in Motion (LiM-ODU) and the Visiting Alumni Lecture Series (VALS).


Language in Motion - ODU

What is Language in Motion?

LiM is a cooperative effort to join experienced ODU alumni teachers with current ODU students in the elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms in order to promote world languages and cultures.

Is LIM-ODU a course?

During the semester, the LLC is open daily: Mondays 9-7, Tuesdays 9-7, Wednesdays 9-5, Thursdays 9-5, Fridays 9-3. Summer 2020 Hours of Operation will include: Mondays-Thursdays from 12-4.

Is there a prerequisite to LiM-ODU?

LiM-ODU promotes (1) study abroad returnees and/or (2) students who have worked or lived abroad for a significant period of time. You must have approval from the instructor.

How do I participate in LiM as a presenter or community member?

Visiting Alumni Lecture Series (VALS)

What is VALS?

The Visiting Alumni Lecture Series began in 2011 thanks to the ODU Alumni Association Special Project Grant Program. VALS fosters partnerships with successful ODU Alumni and ODU students. It highlights the real-life work experiences of Old Dominion University Alumni by providing a platform to discuss their experiences using world languages.

What does VALS accomplish?

VALS (1) generates interest in diverse career fields requiring foreign language skills, such as teaching, localization and translation, interpreting, government, business, etc., (2) provides networking possibilities and potential internships, (3) provides an opportunity to meet professionals with the same interests and ask questions, (4) gives students a chance to practice their language skills.
