College of Health SciencesResearch

Old Dominion University is rapidly developing into a major research university, with research funding growing from roughly $11 million in 1991 to $88 million in 2013. An example of ODU's success in the application of technology to health-related issues, the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) is developing a national center in Medical Modeling and Simulation and, as well, is involved in research to quantify prostate surgery success, among other projects.

Our vision is to be a nationally ranked and internationally recognized leader in advancing healthcare by educating competent health professionals, generating practically significant scientific knowledge and innovative technologies, fostering scholarly collaborations, and promoting positive public health policies.

College of Health Sciences Human Subjects Committee

This Committee reviews all applications for exempt research conducted by faculty, students, or staff in the College of Health Sciences. All applications should be submitted on www.irbnet.org. The committee will review completed applications on a rolling basis from August 20 in the current year to May 20 in the following year. All applications to be reviewed during the Committee recess time can be forwarded to the University Institutional Review Board (https://www.odu.edu/research/compliance/humans ). Given the large number of applications, the committee usually provides feedback in 10 business days after the initial submission date.

To expedite the review process, the committee encourages the applicants to check the following items:

  1. The application form for exempt research has the original signature from the Responsible Project Investigator (RPI).
  2. Attach all investigators' CITI training certificates, which should be completed within one year of the starting date of the proposed research. The investigators are required to maintain CITI training throughout the project period.
  3. Provide a brief research protocol, cover letter, survey instruments, or other applicable documents related to the application..

If the applicant has any questions about www.irbnet.org, please contact Adam J. Rubenstein, Ph.D. (Assistant Vice President for Research Compliance, ARubenst@odu.edu). For questions about the exempt research application, please contact Harry Zhang, Ph.D. (Chair of College of Health Sciences Human Subjects Committee, qzhang@odu.edu ).
