Body Composition & Metabolism Tests
Bod Pod
The Bod Pod is a test that measures air displacement in an enclosed chamber. Females are asked to wear spandex shorts and a sports bra, while men are asked to wear compression shorts. The subject sits in a chamber that measures body volume, and body density is computed and the percentage of body fat can be determined. Testing usually takes 5-10 minutes.
Price: $50 ($35 for additional). Discounts are available for Old Dominion University faculty/staff/students, military, seniors (55+) and groups.
3D Body Scanning
The Styku 3D Body Scanner offers a quick and accurate method of measuring circumferences of the waist, hip, arms, legs, bust, and dozens of other body measurements. The data collected from the scan can also be used to estimate body composition. The scanner also creates a 3D image that can be used to visually track a person's progress over time and can be a unique source of motivation for lifestyle change.
Price: $50 for first test ($35 for additional). Discounts are available for Old Dominion University faculty/staff/students, military, seniors (55+) and groups.
InBody 770 Scanner

This scanner uses imperceptible electrical currents to quickly estimate the body's amounts of fat mass, visceral fat, lean mass, muscle mass, and body water. It also provides regional estimates of lean tissue.
Price: $50 for first test ($35 for additional). Discounts are available for Old Dominion University faculty/staff/students, military, seniors (55+) and groups.
Hydrostatic Weighing

Hydrostatic weighing is a method of measuring body composition using water displacement. Wearing a swimsuit, you are completely immersed into a tank of water and are asked to expel as much air from your lungs as possible. A measurement is taken, and the displacement of water is measured to determine body density. Typically, 4 to 5 trials are repeated. Testing usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Price: $100 for first test ($70 for additional). Discounts are available for Old Dominion University faculty/staff/students, military, seniors (55+) and groups.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

Individuals burn calories at various rates depending on factors such as activity level, gender, muscle mass, etc. For individuals who want to know how many calories they burn daily, the resting metabolic rate is an insightful method in order to know how many calories you burn at rest. This test is able to determine the rate at which the body uses calories for life-sustaining processes. Subjects are required to be in a relaxed supine position for 10-20 minutes while measurements of respiratory gas exchange are taken under a clear, domed hood. Fasting is required prior to testing. For most people, the amount of calories they burn at rest (resting metabolic rate) makes up the majority of calories (>50%) they burn.

VO2 Max Test

Aerobic fitness levels are measured directly from the amount of oxygen consumed during a 10-15 minute progressive exercise test. The VO2 Max test involves the subject wearing a mask connected via a hose to a metabolic cart. The individual will perform a progressive test on a treadmill (beginning at an easy intensity and gradually increasing in speed and grade) until exhaustion is reached. Maximal Oxygen consumption is determined from the test, which is reflective of a person's overall cardiovascular health and risk of diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Price: $125, discounts are available for Old Dominion University faculty/staff/students, military, seniors (55+) and groups.
Substrate Use Test

This test involves exercising on a bike or treadmill at various sub-maximal intensities to measure carbohydrate and fat burning rates. A test typically lasts 30-40 minutes.
Price: $175, discounts are available for Old Dominion University faculty/staff/students, military, seniors (55+) and groups.
