This page contains information relevant to ODU Exercise Science majors (and minors) only. If you are majoring in another discipline within the Human Movement Sciences Department, please visit their specific web page for more information.

Advising Requirements

As an Exercise Science major, you will be required to attend a group scheduling workshop every semester -- from the time that your major is declared until you are in your last semester prior to graduation -- in order to have the advising hold removed from your ODU account. If you do not attend a workshop to have your hold removed, you will not be able to register for classes for the next semester(s).

Prior to attending each advising session, plan out your course schedule as best as you can.

Bring the following to each group scheduling workshop:

  • Registration form filled out with the courses you intend to take during the next semester(s) - for the spring semester at the fall scheduling workshop and for both the summer (if desired) and fall semesters at the spring workshop. You will sign and turn in this form at the workshop you attend. These forms can be found online though the Registrar's office.
  • EXSC Curriculum Worksheet, available for the latest undergraduate catalog year.
  • Please bring an updated copy of your degree works, accessible either through Leo Online or Canvas via the MyODU Portal.
  • More information and specific details about accessing and using degreeworks are available through the Office of the Registrar.
  • Laptop (optional)

Graduation Checklist

In the semester prior to the one in which you plan to graduate, you need to do the following:

The deadlines to complete the graduation application are:

- SPRING: November 30

- SUMMER: February 28

- FALL: June 30

The application forms can be found on LeoOnline.

Make sure that your GPA for all EXSC classes is 2.0 or higher, as well as your overall GPA in all courses. DegreeWorks lists both your overall GPA and your GPA in the EXSC major.

Also, make sure that you will have completed 120 credit hours by the time you wish to graduate, including all major, double major, minor, cluster, Option D, or other elective courses.

Grade Forgiveness Policy: You may repeat up to 5 classes in which you had a "C-" or lower for grade forgiveness to raise your GPA high enough to graduate. The second time you take a class and receive a grade, that grade will become your new grade for the course, regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the first grade you received.

Students entering under the 2012-13 or subsequent catalogs must meet the new writing requirement, which is a grade of "C" or higher in ENGL 110C, in either ENGL 211C or 221C or 231C, and in the W course of the major (EXSC 431). The exit examination of writing proficiency will not be an option for these students.

Completion of a University parallel associate degree will meet lower-level general education requirements, but it will not necessarily meet the new writing requirement. Transfer students with an associate degree who do not have transferrable credit for ENGL 110C and ENGL 211C or 221C or 231C will be required take the course(s) to meet the new requirement. External exams
for ENGL 110C and ENGL 211C are also available through the University Testing Center.

Students who entered under earlier catalogs may still, for a time, take and pass the exit examination of writing proficiency (although this option will soon be phased out). You should sign up to take this at the Writing Center as soon as you have completed ENGL 110 and at least 58 credits total. You can also seek out writing assistance prior to taking the exam at the ODU Writing Center.

Meet with an EXSC advisor to have an HMS Department certification form completed for the registrar's office. Without this form from your adviser, they will not be able to award your diploma.

MEET with your MINOR DEGREE ADVISOR (if applicable):

Meet with an advisor in the appropriate department to certify that you have met the requirements for your minor (if you completed one), or a second major, either the semester before or during the one in which you plan to graduate.

If you completed a cluster, interdisciplinary minor, or Option D, these can be certified during the visit with your EXSC advisor (and you can also check this status on DegreeWorks yourself first).

Complete the online senior assessment. An e-mail about this should be sent to you within 4-8 weeks after you apply for graduation.

If you did not receive the e-mailed invitation to complete the survey, you can request access to the senior assessment survey through DegreeWorks.

Schedule an exit interview for Exercise Science with the EXSC Undergraduate Program Coordinator (currently Dr. Laura Hill). Do it early in the semester that you plan to graduate as time is limited during the 3-4 weeks preceding registration when advising sessions are being held.

Print out and complete the following two forms and bring them with you to your scheduled interview:

 REGISTER to participate in COMMENCEMENT:

After you apply for graduation, you will have to register separately to go through the commencement ceremony in May or December. You will only be able to register up until about 6-7 weeks before the ceremony's scheduled date, so do it early in the semester. (If you register later, you may still be able to participate, but inclusion of your name in the graduation program is not guaranteed.

Commencement application is completed online, where you can also find information about graduation and how to pick up your commencement tickets.
