High-Achieving Latinxs in Engineering & Science (HALES)
**Please note: While this in-person program is temporarily canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we are able to resume in-person activities, we invite HALES applicants and participants to join us online for the REYES (Remote Experience for Young Engineers & Scientists) summer program from June 28 to July 23, 2021. During REYES, we will be hosting special sessions for HALES participants.
Join a select group of high-achieving, motivated and ambitious Latinxs students from Virginia and Puerto Rico to participate in an exclusive invitation-only one-week science and engineering program this summer at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia.
During this one-week summer experience, we will host you on our waterfront campus and engage you in lectures from leading experts, discussions and behind-the-scene field trips that showcase potential hands-on research opportunities in applied physics, science and engineering both at ODU and through our partnerships with NASA Langley and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). This summer program is not only a great introduction to ODU, but also provides you the opportunity to interact with researchers in specialized fields who can inspire you to pursue advanced studies and a career in science and/or engineering.
Residential housing will be offered on campus and you will have access to campus dining, athletic and recreational facilities. Old Dominion is a large public doctoral research university. Our metropolitan location in coastal Virginia is a top tourist destination and home to many of the world's leading companies and research facilities.
Students are admitted on a rolling basis. You are encouraged to apply early for this summer experience. Admission decisions are based on a combination of factors, including grades, courses taken and a personal statement. If you apply and are admitted into this one-week summer program, ODU will cover your costs for the whole program—including travel, transportation, lodging and meals, lectures and field trips (a value of more than $1,350. If you are admitted into this program, to hold your seat, there is a nonrefundable registration fee of $50 due at registration).
In keeping with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization to slow the spread of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Old Dominion University has temporarily canceled in-person activies, including the HALES summer progra. To make up for this cancellation we developed REYES (Remote Experience for Young Engineers & Scientits) -- a free, online program full of educational and fun activities, including courses, virtual tours, and guest lectures that we are offering to you remotely this summer. We invite you and your friends to register today for our 2021 summer program!
Application process is CLOSED until further notice.
