The Old Dominion University Office of Academic Affairs is offering funding to develop Course-based Undergraduate Research (CURE) opportunities in ODU Colleges. This program is aimed at generating active learning in the classroom by embedding the research process into course curricula. Studies indicate that students who engage in undergraduate research develop higher-level critical thinking skills and discover new knowledge.

The key features of Course-based Undergraduate Research classes are: (adapted and modified from https://serc.carleton.edu/curenet/whatis.html).

• CUREs offer opportunities for students to make discoveries, in their discipline or other disciplines linked to the content area, that are of interest to the broader community.
• Students troubleshoot, problem-solve, repeat aspects of their work, and reflect on the learning process as the research progresses.
• CUREs allow students to communicate their research results to a wider audience beyond the classroom.
• Students may engage in a range of research practices such as collecting and analyzing data, sources, artifacts and/or creative works, collaborating to design and/or produce artistic pieces, building and defending arguments, and working with one another and more-experienced researchers, artists, and/or performers. The work that students do in a CURE must have the potential to contribute to a larger body of knowledge in the discipline in which the course is offered.

Projects will support the inclusion of high-impact learning practices in ODU courses and expand undergraduate research opportunities in the classroom.

The Provost's Office will make funds available up to $2000 per awardee. Most faculty usually request $1000, $1500, or $2000. As with the 2019 CURE program, College Deans and/or Department Chairs are strongly encouraged to offer matching funds.

1. Principal investigators will develop one research-based course on the CURE model with the goal that the course will become part of future departmental offerings.
2. Courses can be designed for undergraduates at any lower or upper division level. Generally, lower-division courses will involve a larger number of students in less-intensive research activities, while upper-division courses may involve fewer students in more in-depth research experiences.
3. The awards may be used for course development, support of courses including supplies or personnel, or other items directly related to the development or teaching of CUREs.
4. CURE grants are not intended as continuing sources of support. All funds must be spent by June 15, 2022, even if the course is not offered until the fall 2022.

1. All proposals are evaluated and ranked on the basis of merit.
2. If Deans and/or Chairs offer matching funds, that fact must be documented on the Proposal Administrative Form.
3. A faculty member can submit only one proposal per RFP, either as PI or Co-PI.
4. Faculty submitting proposals must not be a part of the review and evaluation process.
5. A committee established by the Center for Faculty Development will evaluate the proposals.

1. Successful applicants will be expected to offer a CURE in Summer or Fall of 2022.
2. A project report evaluating student-learning goals will be due to the Director of the Center for Faculty Development by June 30, 2023.
3. Undergraduates involved with CURE projects should be strongly encouraged to attend and preferably present at the ODU Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Spring semester following the award period (Spring 2023).

The purpose of the CURE award is to provide seed funding development of Course-based Undergraduate Research at ODU. The key features of a CURE are detailed above on page 1. A crucial component to a course-based research experience is novel discovery. Therefore, purely lecture-based courses, courses producing simple literature reviews, or laboratory courses in which outcomes are known in advance do not qualify.

Eligible applicants are ODU full-time teaching and research faculty, tenured, tenure-track and non-tenure track. Funding is contingent on the applicant's commitment to remaining at ODU for the duration of the grant and to the applicant's acting as instructor of record for the proposed course.

Faculty can request up to $2000 from the Provost's Office. Matching funds or in-kind contributions from College Deans and Department Chairs are strongly encouraged. Proposed allocation of funds and in-kind resources should be detailed clearly in the budget description; all funds must be clearly linked to the development and instruction of the proposed course. A competitive review process will determine award outcomes.

Each award recipient will be expected to:

1. Develop and offer a CURE in Summer or Fall of 2022 as a pilot course.
2. Serve as instructor of record for the CURE in its first offering.
3. Submit a Progress Learning Report to the Director of the Center for Faculty Development in June 30, 2023, including evaluation of learning goals and detailing any scholarly projects (reports, presentations, publications, exhibitions, performances, etc.) resulting from the CURE offering.
4. Recipients are expected to acknowledge the support of the Provost's Office when making publications or presentations as a result of this award.
5. CURE awardees are strongly encouraged to make short videos or use other strategies to showcase their work with the students.

Proposals will be ranked by the review committee according to the following criteria:

1. Plan for developing and offering the CURE, including the quality of undergraduate research experience.
2. Acknowledgement of matching funds from Department and/or Dean, if applicable.
3. Potential for becoming a durable component of departmental curriculum.
4. Broader impacts, including potential for producing scholarly products (publications, presentations, exhibits, performances, creative scholarship, etc.)
5. Proposals must arrive on time, on or before 5:00 PM on March 18, 2022.

• Proposals should be jargon-free and written so that people in different disciplines can understand the approach and importance of the research experience.
• A Proposal Administrative form signed by the applicant's College Dean and Department Chair is required in addition to the documents described below. This form serves as a cover letter.
• Sections I-VI below (Proposal Administrative Form, Abstract, Narrative, Budget Justification, Draft Syllabus, and Curriculum Vitae are required.
• Follow all instructions and use (a) through (e) as section headings.
• Submit proposals in .pdf format no later than 5:00 PM on Friday March 18, 2022. Submit to Dr. Annette Finley-Croswhite, Director, Center for Faculty Development. (Please use the words "CURE Application" in the subject line to ensure delivery. Proposals sent under subject lines not containing these words may not be reviewed.

III. Narrative (five pages max., double spaced, 1 in. margins, font 12 point, Times New Roman or Arial).

1. Background and Rationale. Describe the importance and background for the research activity in the proposed CURE. Research activities should have a clearly described stakeholder (e.g., scholarly or artistic community, public, local concerns, etc.) and should not be simple academic exercises with no relevance outside the classroom. Provide enough information so that an individual not directly involved in the particular area of scholarship can assess its significance.
2. Course Design. Provide a detailed plan for the proposed CURE, including the learning goals and objectives, methods, and approaches that will be used to embed research into the course. The course design should clearly demonstrate aspects of CURE characteristics described in Section A, including: 1) iterative work and troubleshooting and/or knowledge or performance creation; 2) opportunities to communicate findings; and 3) contributions to a larger body of knowledge. If any proposed activities involve animal use, human subjects, or intellectual property issues, indicate how compliance with University policy will be achieved.

IV. Budget and Justification. Recipients may request up to $1500 for one semester (Summer or Fall 2022). If matching funds are included, this must be documented. Allowable expenses include faculty summer salary, student summer stipends, supplies and minor equipment, and travel related to the project. All proposed expenditures must be clearly justified in this section. All expenditures must be made by June 15, 2022, even if the course is taught in the fall.
