National Disability Employment Awareness Month is held each October to commemorate the many and varied contributions of people with disabilities to America's workplaces and societies.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is held each October to commemorate the many and varied contributions of people with disabilities to America's workplaces and societies. Originally founded as a week-long celebration in 1945, by 1988 the United States Congress expanded commemorations across the entire month. Although great strides have been made through federal and state legislation to protect the rights of those with disabilities, there still exists a wide disparity in employment rates and to accessibility in the workplace. Last year, 19.1 percent of people with a disability were employed. Although this is a slight increase from 2020, statistics from the Bureau of Labor reveled that people with disabilities were much less likely to be employed than those without a disability.

Today, one in five people in the United States lives with a disability. Some are visible, while others are less apparent. This year's theme "Disability: Part of the Equity Equation" reminds us that accessibility in the workplace is about people. It is being able to identify and respond to the ways the design of our content interfaces, and environments might impede someone's ability to access, understand, or interact fully and productively. Accessibility is identifying and responding to conditions of in-access and providing equitable opportunity for all regardless of a person's abilities or circumstances.

At ODU, we believe that all people should be given the opportunity to participate fully within the social and economic life of their communities and to engage in diverse and inclusive workplaces. The University has made efforts to increase and sustain their own community by Establishing the Employees with Disabilities Association, an employee resource group for faculty and staff organized to promote "greater involvement and representation of employees with disabilities" across the campus. ODU has also collaborated with the City of Norfolk and the Department of Defense to implement Hire Vets Now Fellowship program designed to link transitioning service members with civilian training and industry partners. Finally, the Office of Educational Accessibility works tirelessly to ensure the most effective use of online tools and resources for every employee and student with identifiable disabilities and impairments who might need accommodations.
