Sherif Ishak Named ASCE Fellow

By Sherry DiBari

Sherif Ishak, professor and chair of ODU's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was recently named a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The fellow designation is a prestigious honor held by only 3% of ASCE's 150,000+ members. Candidates must hold a Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license and have at least 10 years of continuous membership.

"ASCE fellows have made celebrated contributions around the world," said Ishak. "I am honored to be recognized by this prestigious organization."

"The Batten College of Engineering and Technology celebrates the accomplishments of Dr. Ishak and we congratulate him on this great honor," said Khan Iftekharuddin, interim dean of the College of Engineering.

Prior to joining ODU in 2018, Ishak was a professor of civil engineering at Louisiana State University and a professor and department chair at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

He has over 25 years of experience in the field of transportation engineering with emphasis on intelligent transportation systems, traffic operation and control, traffic flow modeling and simulation, traffic safety, human factors and driving behavior, artificial intelligence and advanced computing applications in transportation, and the new emerging area of connected and automated vehicles.

Ishak has served as the chair of the Transportation Research Board Standing Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing Applications, which promotes and advances interdisciplinary research at the intersection of the fields of transportation engineering and computer science and information technology.

He is also a member of the five-year National Cooperative Highway Research Program panel for maintaining and executing a research agenda for the Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) roadmap.

Ishak holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in civil engineering from the University of Central Florida and a B.S. in civil engineering from Cairo University.
