Huntington Ingalls Industries - Newport News Shipbuilding Internships and Co-Ops

Summer internship applicants will be placed in various departments at Newport News Shipbuilding located in Newport News, Virginia. Students will work 8 weeks during the summer months, 30 hours a week.

Co-op programs give college students the opportunity to combine the knowledge learned in the classroom with practical work experience. By gaining valuable work experience in Co-op programs, participants are able to better evaluate their future career opportunities. Co-op assignments are based on a candidates goals, company needs, and are posted to the Careers Site intermittently throughout the year.

This program is a direct hire authority for undergraduate and graduate degree seeking students enrolled in scientific, technical, engineering, or mathematics majors. Naval Research Enterprise Research Program (NREIP)

The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) provides an opportunity for college students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. The goals of NREIP are to encourage participating college students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. NREIP is providing competitive research internships to approximately 733 college students this year. Virginia Institute for Spaceflight & Autonomy (VISA) Internship with Virginia SmallSat Data Consortium (VSDC)

The VSDC project at the ODU's Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) is offering paid virtual summer internships to highly motivated Old Dominion University undergraduate and graduate students interested in making an impact on their local communities and the commonwealth. Those internships are an opportunity to work with world-class researchers focusing on solving societal challenges using data from space, air, surface, and underwater. Selected students will be exposed to day-to-day activities including identifying problems, designing inclusive and accessible solutions, building a community of problem solvers throughout the state, and being part of the larger team of students, scientists and researchers. Virginia Microelectronics Consortium (VMEC) Summer Scholar Program

The VMEC Summer Scholar Program offers juniors and seniors attending a university in Virginia the opportunity for hands on research using state of the art technology in either an academic or industrial environment. Undergraduate Research Opportunities

NEW: ECE Senior Thesis Course Sequence (ECE 498 + ECE 499)

Two-semester thesis project involving literature research, development of technical writing skills, and possibly obtaining lab experience using a variety of techniques and equipment. Each student will undertake a research experience under the supervision of a departmental faculty member. A preliminary report of research findings is required at the end of the semester. The research culminates in a thesis that includes a literature review, description of methods, results and conclusions, and an oral presentation. Upon successful completion, the combination of ECE 498 (1 credit) and ECE 499 (2 credits) can be considered equivalent to one 3-credit ECE Technical Elective Course. (Available fall, spring, summer)

NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs)

NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

Old Dominion University (ODU) has robust REU programs for students wanting to explore Chemistry (Community College Students), Computer & Information Science, Computer Engineering - Cybersecurity, and Psychology (Transportation).

ODU: Deep Learning Driven Cybersecurity Research (NSF)

Cybersecurity is a priority area of national need. As a multidisciplinary field, cybersecurity requires that the professionals have knowledge and skills in various disciplines. In this REU site program, students from multiple disciplines, such as computer science, computer engineering, criminal justice, information technology, and psychology, will explore a variety of cybersecurity topics, using Deep Learning or AI as a main methodology. The REU program is also enriched through various seminars, social activities, and field trips to Naval Base Norfolk, and Navy Cyber Defense Operation Command (NCDOC). The REU site program offers unique multidisciplinary learning and research opportunities for undergraduate students in an inherently multidisciplinary cybersecurity discipline. Each student will be able to select his/her preferred mentor and work with the mentor to select an REU research project based on his/her interests and background. The students will master research methodologies and obtain valuable research experiences in an area of critical national need, and also better prepare for graduate studies.
