Internships

What is an Internship?

Student in Perry Library

An internship is a chance for you to gain real-world experience working with a team of computing professionals. It's also a chance to gain valuable experience and to get a foot in the door at the start of your career.

What to expect:

  • Internships are open to all students, mostly undergraduates in their junior year, or graduate students in mid-program.
  • An internship is a regular job, usually with regular hours.
  • You'll work in a business setting, with expectations for appropriate dress and behavior.
  • You'll get training and a chance to develop your computing skills.
  • You may receive a job offer (part-time and/or post-graduation) after successful completion of an internship.
  • You'll earn a salary, which varies by employer.
  • You may have costs, for clothing, transportation, rent, etc.
  • You can earn elective credit for the CS major (CS368).

How do I find an Internship?

  1. Preparation
You need an outstanding resume and good interviewing skills in order to be considered by employers. ODU Career Development Services can help develop these, along with workshops and counseling. Visit their office or website for help building your resume and practicing interviewing. You can also learn more about upcoming recruiting events on campus.
  2. Post your resume
Employers use resume repositories to search for interns and for job candidates. Begin by posting your resume on websites such as:

    • Careers4Monarchs: ODU's careers website that helps students and alumni to find both internships and jobs
    • Internships.com: Offers information about internship opportunities, and help with preparing for internships
    • LinkedIn: A professional networking website where you can make personal contacts with people who can provide advice and connect you to job opportunities. Search here for ODU alums and for people connected with companies where you might like to work.
    • wayup.com: Offers Internship and career job postings for college students
  3. Search online
Find websites for employers in your area, including banks, manufacturers, consulting companies, government offices, etc. Many large companies have established internship programs advertised on their websites, along with contact information. Ask about training, work assignments, location, dates, and salary.
  4. Interview
Do your homework by reading about the details of the company. Learn about their mission, their history, what work they do, etc. Be prepared with a list of relevant questions about the job, company culture, and terms of employment. Interviewers will be impressed when they see that you've done your homework!
  5. Course Credit
If you would like to apply for CS major elective credit (CS368) for an internship, visit the CDS Internships and Cooperative Education page and select the "Sciences" tab for more information.
