Career Switcher Program:Eligibility & Endorsement Areas

Eligibility & Endorsement Areas

Before applying to the Career Switcher Program candidates must make sure they have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum of three years of full-time work experience. Currently the following endorsements are offered:

  • Art Education, P-12
  • Health and Physical Education, P-12
  • Foreign Language, P-12
  • English as a Second Language, P-12
  • Business and Information Technology, 6-12
  • Marketing Education, 6-12
  • Work and Family Studies, 6-12
  • Elementary Education, P-3 & P-6
  • Middle Education (Math, Science, Social Studies and English), 6-8
  • Secondary Biology, 6-12
  • Secondary Chemistry, 6-12
  • Secondary Earth Science, 6-12
  • Secondary Physics, 6-12
  • Secondary Civics/Social Studies, 6-12
  • Secondary English, 6-12
  • Secondary Math, 6-12


Career Switcher Program candidates are required to pass the Virginia licensure assessment exams with qualifying scores on the professional teacher's assessments prescribed by the Board of Education as well as complete the Old Dominion University application process. It is recommended that individuals seeking an endorsement in Elementary Education or Middle Education attend one of our upcoming informational sessions as additional coursework is required.
