The MPA at ODU prepares students for careers as professionals in public service and provides students who have considerable experience in the public sector an opportunity to enhance their professional knowledge, skills and abilities, enabling them to advance their careers.
Our graduates hold positions as city managers, program planners, policy analysts, and managers in federal, state, and local agencies, as well as non-profit agencies.
Students have the opportunity to specialize in areas like Non-Profit Management and Governance, and Multi-Sector Public Service, while earning Graduate Certificates in Public Procurement and Contract Management, Women's Studies, Social Justice & Entrepreneurship, or Business Analytics and Big Data.

Live in Hampton Roads? Take courses online and have time for work and family.

Live outside of Hampton Roads...or Virginia...or the United States? Complete the entire MPA program online (online tuition is comparable to in-state rates)!

In the military or travel a lot? Take classes online and complete your degree wherever you go!

Classes are offered online for students employed full time who wish to pursue graduate education on a part-time basis.

Full-time students typically complete the program within two years.

Part-time students usually only require a little over 3 years to complete the program.

The mission of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program in the School of Public Service at Old Dominion University is to develop professionals with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to lead and advance public service in a diverse, multi-sector environment. We expect our graduates to be capable of critical problem solving, effective communication, skillful implementation of policy and programs, and ethical application of management and leadership concepts. The MPA program serves the region, state, and nation; supports the professions of public administration and public service; and advances the state of knowledge through applied and scholarly research. The Master of Public Administration is accredited by the NASPAA Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation and listed on the Annual Roster of Accredited Programs in conformity with NASPAA standards.
